Is Kirby Smart losing his recruiting edge with Jared Curtis eyeing Oregon and South Carolina?

Losing a highly valuable commit is a sting to every program! 5-star QB Jared Curtis committed to Georgia back in March, raising fans’ hopes for the 2026 season. But in what was a shocking move, the Nashville Christian School standout announced a U-turn from his commitment last week before their Texas game. And now that another top school is on Curtis’ radar, this is a huge blow to Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs.

According to On3 Recruits, Jared Curtis is the No. 3 ranked player in the country and the No. 1 ranked QB of the 2026 class. In their latest YouTube episode on October 26, Josh Newberg and Chad Simmons discussed the potential reason behind his Georgia decommitment. Despite the void he left behind at Georgia, Newberg believes that the Bulldogs still have “a real shot to land him.” To this, Simmons replied, “Oregon kind of speaks for itself. He named them the leader but there’s a lot of schools in the mix. You said Georgia has not gone away. They’re definitely not out of the mix but I think a strong SEC flavor with South Carolina. He loves that coaching staff. He’s an opportunity there.”

After Jared Curtis de-committed from Georgia, he placed Dan Lanning’s program on top of his picks. He told On3, “My interest in Oregon is above the others right now. It’s my relationship with coach Stein and coach Lanning.” There’s no reason not to feel enamored with the Ducks. They’ve established themselves as an elite unbeaten powerhouse by taking the No. 1 spot in the AP Poll ranking. But we can’t snub South Carolina.

As Simmons mentioned, South Carolina poses a strong chance to land the commitment of Jared Curtis. He visited Columbia this season to attend the Gamecocks’ game against LSU. Also, SC upped their game in recruiting Curtis after they lost the commitment from their 2026 QB Landon Duckworth. Simmons reiterated, “I think Oregon, Georgia, South Carolina are some schools to watch right now.” But they’re far from the only schools trying to win Curtis’ favor.

Jared Curtis is a highly sought QB

The fight for Jared Curtis is inevitable. The 6’4, 255-pounder was a force in his freshman season where he led Nashville Christian to a 10-3 record with 27 touchdowns. In 2023, he threw for 2,522 yards and 25 touchdowns. He’s on to a good start this season with 6-1 so far.

With his recruitment open, he’s now one of the two uncommitted players in ESPN’s top-10 pocket passers of the 2026 class. He already has nearly 40 offers from schools. According to On3 Hayes Fawcett, his top schools also include Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and USC. It’s still early for a final decision but a visit to his top school in Oregon could provide more hints in the upcoming months.
