Well, well, well. Time for some deconstruction of the 2024 College Football Playoff. And here comes one of the most controversial figures of college football. After all, come on, when it’s time for some core criticism, is it possible without the ESPN man? It’s none other than Paul Finebaum. Already, till now in this season, a lot of programs got lucky at the expense of others. And we have seen how the dominoes fell here and there. This time, it’s Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks who are on the unlucky side even being the top seed. The analyst then picked up two programs who do not deserve the top spots.
We have got the top four seeds in the College Football Playoff. At No.1 there are Lanning’s Oregon Ducks, No.2 are Georgia Bulldogs, No.3 Boise State Broncos, and No. 4 Arizona State Sun Devils. These are the four teams that got lucky to have received a bye to the quarterfinal round of the first-ever 12-team CFP. Now that the top four seeds are here, it’s the best time for Finebaum’s opinion. On the ESPN College Football podcast, host Jeremy Schaap asked the ESPN analyst what he would like to change at the moment. And guess what? Finebaum did not waste a minute thinking about his answer. He was ready with it and said, “The seeding has to change, Jeremy.”
Without beating around the bush, Finebaum addressed the elephant in the room. As we know, the man never hesitates. This time there has been no exception. He straightway said, “Boise State and Arizona State should not have a buy. I don’t mean to sound elitist even though I work in the SEC primarily.” Well, somewhere we have seen how being the top seed, Lanning had to pay a heavy price.

Maybe the Ducks still regret winning against James Franklin’s Penn State. After all, had they lost the B1G Championship on Saturday, December 8, they would have faced a lower-ranked conference winner. That’s what Finebaum has a problem with. He stated, “A system where a school like Oregon who’s the number one seed has a rougher path than perhaps Penn State or someone else.” Now that’s unfair, right? Hold on as Finebaum made another bold remark.

Paul Finebaum on Boise State’s chances to silence the haters
Spencer Danielson and co. must be on cloud nine. Firstly, they have found their spot in the College Football playoff race. On top of that, their star running back Ashton Jeanty secured the second spot for the Heisman Trophy. The young chap is 132 yards shy of eclipsing Oklahoma State legend Barry Sanders’ all-time single-season yardage record. Looks like Finebaum is not quite interested in the highs of Boise State.
Instead, the ESPN analyst thought of commenting on the chances of the Broncos winning the national championship. On the Paul Finebaum Show, he did not mince his words before claiming, “Boise State’s got a really good team, but they’re small. There is no way that they could deal with the best of this bracket.” That’s when ESPN’s Football Power Index aligned its rating with his speech.

As per the stats, it offered Boise State a 1.8% chance of winning the national championship. Looks like Paul Finebaum’s words are now causing some serious impact. The 1.8% figure is tied with the Arizona State Sun Devils. The FPI has also placed Spencer Danielson’s program placed the Broncos at 25th position, the lowest of any playoff contender. Boise State and Arizona already have enough haters, will they be able to silence them?
