Woah! While college football to the NFL swaps have been common, the vice versa has peaked too. From Bill Belichick to Jim Knowles, the ride back from the league to college has now become a common sight. Right now, it’s Ryan Day’s Ohio State who has risen to the limelight. The courtesy? They are now on a scouting mission to land an assistant coach.
That’s none other than a famous coach who is carrying the Kansas City Chiefs tag. In that way, Day and Co. must have put Patrick Mahomes in full panic mode. Even though their new interest holds a very colorful past, that’s not going to hamper his fit in Columbus.

How Ryan Day is looking for his potential game-changer
When it comes to the transfer portal, the Buckeyes lost 21 players! Now that’s truly heartbreaking. While Day tried to fix the cracks in his player roster, he did not leave the coaching roster unattended. Unlike Chip Kelly, who left to become offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders, after winning the national championship, Day chose to stay back. Not just stay back; he is giving his blood, sweat, and tears to keep the Buckeyes’ legacy alive.
The program has reportedly hired Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen to be its offensive line coach. Meanwhile, Day has promoted their wide receivers coach Brian Hartline to their offensive coordinator. Now that the offense looks kind of sorted, time to pan our focus on the defense.

Looks like City Chiefs star Mahomes and his program already have their eyes on Day’s move. After all, the Ohio State HC has reportedly shown his interest in interviewing Chiefs defensive line coach Joe Cullen. On The Number One College Football Show, host RJ Young doubled down on the chances of why the Cullen x Buckeyes collab is going to be a super hit. The analyst stated, “Joe Cullen getting an outside look and also getting a guy that has been working with Steve Spagnuolo for the last three years, I think is a great thing for Ohio State.”
What’s your perspective on:
Is Patrick Mahomes sweating over Ohio State's interest in his defensive line coach?
Have an interesting take?
Cullen has been in Kansas City since 2022, but the 57-year-old has a vast coaching history. His stops included the Jacksonville Jaguars as DC. Other than this, he graced NFL giants like the Baltimore Ravens, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, and Detroit Lions with his charm as the defensive line coach. However, having served Mahomes’ program under Steve Spagnuolo is a big USP.
After all, the coach hired cornerbacks like Trent McDuffie, who will be the game-changer for the Buckeyes. So in a way, Cullen joining Day’s squad would be like, “what they’re doing at Kansas City layers over the top of what Ohio State wants to do very well.” But amidst his rich NFL resume, how could we forget his checkered past?

Joe Cullen’s troubled past that derailed his coaching career
Cullen had the most unusual comeback story like no other. Back in 2006, one day, he awoke in the driver’s seat of his SUV, blue and red lights bouncing off his rearview mirror. How did he land there? Sadly, he had no idea. The last thing he remembered was drinking wh- – – – y with a few colleagues at a bar earlier that afternoon. The officers found him n- – – – in his car, and ultimately he was cuffed.
The Detroit Lions suspended Cullen for the season opener, and he subsequently entered an alcohol rehabilitation program. Well, that was not the first time he landed in trouble. Back in 2005, he was fired from the University of Mississippi after he was arrested for passing out in a Subway restaurant. Even the Kansas City Chiefs were not spared of Cullen’s misdemeanors.
Do you remember the coach’s heated exchange with defensive end Chris Jones back in 2023? In the third quarter, the Chiefs allowed the Buffalo Bills to add to their lead with a 10-play, 62-yard drive that ended with a field goal. Right after that, Joe Cullen got all serious and smashed his tablet in rage while arguing back and forth with his player. Even with the controversies, Joe Cullen is still a hot commodity, and Ryan Day is eager to snag him from the Chiefs.
