Who could’ve thought that doing the right thing would get you hate? The Mountaineers are about to take on the Lions soon today on August 31st. Back in 2023, West Virginia managed to pull in 9 wins alongside a solid 5-1 win mark back at home. Although they did lose to Penn State last year, this time around, the team is bringing back its talented offense to claim the title. So, it wasn’t a big surprise that Pat McAfee, out of all the people, decided to put in a little something for the Mountaineers.
On3 took to X on August 30th to talk about the entire scenario. “Pat McAfee has pledged $1M to West Virginia’s NIL collective during his live show in Morgantown,” On3 noted in their post. The entire donation was a node to his teammates and the college he played for back during his college career. During the show, McAfee noted, “I will be donating $1M to the West Virginia NIL Collective from the entire team I played alongside.” This is an amazing gesture. The funds will allow West Virginia to expand its portal recruitments and get some solid kids on their team to lead their roster during the 2025 class.

McAfee went on to thank the guys he played alongside for the entire experience. “I was very lucky to be on a team with you,” McAfee noted while talking about Woen Schmitt, Darius Reynaud, and Reed Williams. While most sane people out there would think that whatever Pat McAfee did, it was a good way of showing his gratitude to the team that kick-started his career in sports. However, the West Virginia fans on X were NOT happy. With one calling the team “mid year after year.”
Was Pat McAfee thinking straight?

“Who cares, still going to be mid year after year!” a fan noted. This kind of makes very little sense because the Mountaineers under Neal Brown had a solid run last year. The team also managed to win 5 out of 6 games on their home turf. The same fan had another jab. “Still going to be mid and overrated every single year,” they mentioned on X. In all honestly, WVU has some solid players on the roster. If we look at Jaden Bray or Justin Robinson, both kids have the potential to become the next big players in the NFL. So, we think people should cut the team some slack.
One more fan on X had a more funny take. “Was he drunk and high again?!” they asked. While the entire 1 million donation might sound like an outrageous amount, McAfee is settled enough to make such big plays. And to him, it’s worth it. He gets to give back to the team and the college he played with. Finally, one fan had quite a rough take. “Gassing up a wanna-be making a donation to an NIL collective? What are we doing here? If he had donated the money to charity or something, then report this. But who the f**k cares about a Group of 7 teams like West Virginia?” they noted. While it is true that sending that money out to charity would have been nice, we still cannot just underscore WVU’s performance. Last season they managed to prove themselves. However, we are yet to see what happens today during the match against Pen State.
