Pat McAfee’s career as an analyst has continued to trouble him. Ever since he signed that five-year, approximately $85 million deal with the network, speculations were rife on whether the retired football star would be able to adapt to the traditional workplace culture with his larger-than-life personality. And going by the recent controversies, the 37-year-old seemed to be struggling quite a bit in that front, as his coworkers/detractors took his side, before McAfee sidelined all of the negativity to take a breath of fresh air. But before we get to that…
It all started right after ESPN fired a bunch of veteran broadcasters—NBA color commentator Jeff Van Gundy, Monday Night Countdown host Suzy Kolber, longtime NBA analyst Jalen Rose, and former First Take host Max Kellerman—after McAfee signed the pricey deal. While many insiders ultimately blamed the former Indianapolis Colts punter for the layoffs, the latter responded with the utmost grace.
“I did a lot of reflecting about our show’s journey while I was getting murdered on the internet today (hell yeah). All roads lead back to how honored I am to be the leader of such a talented group and how lucky I am to be a part of this team. I wish we could’ve worked alongside a lot of the folks that got released today. Some absolute legends, that we all respect, in the sports media world were trending today for losing jobs. That sucks.. no matter how you slice it. We’re gonna continue to control the things we can control.. try to do daily sports coverage in an entertaining and informative fashion.. and be thankful for all of the opportunities that have been earned thru a lot of hard work and commitment from the group of dudes I get to call coworkers,” he wrote in July, 2023. Well, this was just the start…

The controversy reached its breaking point when McAfee talked about Brett Favre’s $77 million welfare fraud scheme in Mississippi, saying, “Every time his name gets brought up, we have to mention that he tied the hands of the poor people and took money right out of their pockets,” before adding on another occasion, “[Favre is] certainly in the middle of stealing from poor people in Mississippi right now.” The result? A defamation lawsuit, that was later dropped. And then comes the biggest dispute of all. And at the heart of it? Recently poached New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
During a January 2024 “Aaron Rodgers Tuesdays” appearance on the Pat McAfee’s show, the QB had suggested that late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel was involved with Jeffrey Epstein: “There’s a lot of people, including Jimmy Kimmel, who are hoping that list doesn’t come out.” Kimmel’s counterattack was swift, too. “Dear A—hole,” the host wrote on X, before adding, “For the record, I’ve not met, flown with, visited, or had any contact whatsoever with Epstein, nor will you find my name on any ‘list’ other than the clearly-phony nonsense that soft-brained wackos like yourself can’t seem to distinguish from reality. Your reckless words put my family in danger. Keep it up and we will debate the facts further in court.” An apology followed soon after, but the deal was done.
It was almost akin to opening a can of worms, which we’ll tell you later, as McAfee would surely tell us to stop right about now. Why? Well, who wants to think about work while on a romantic getaway?
Now that the long and hectic college football season is over, McAfee seems to have jetted away from his problems. He and his wife Samantha spent Valentine’s week away from the hustle bustle, evident from the latter’s Instagram Story update on February 11.
The picture showed the analyst ditching the suits and ties for some serious beach vibes. Sporting a black sleeveless top, shorts, flip-flops, and sunglasses, he posed inside a private jet, looking ready for some much-needed relief and rejuvenation. Interestingly, it wasn’t just the couple who were ready for Valentine’s Day…
Even the jet’s interior was adorned with a “LOVE you” balloon, a teddy bear, and a bouquet. But where exactly is the McAfee household off to?
The retired punter took it upon himself to reveal that on February 17, as he posted a selfie with Samatha, enjoying sunset on the beach, captioned, “Aww guys..I went on vacation with a rocket ship.. We went to the moon a few times..’Twas fantastic. I love you @mrsmcafeeshow.” The couple has been dating since 2019 and got married in 2020. Even after all these years, McAfee and Samantha have kept their spark intact. Lucky man, McAfee. He now has another important woman in his life, though.
That’s none other than their daughter, Mackenzie, who was born in May, 2023. Resharing Samantha’s post of Mackenzie giggling, McAfee wrote, “I f- – – – – g love these girls.”

Looks like the stars are in the analyst’s favor, as not only is he enjoying the offseason to the brim, but also experiencing a steady rise in love and popularity back at home from his colleagues…
Pat McAfee’s hot seat gets cooler with a big support
Well, when McAfee took retirement from sports, he was only 29. The All-Pro selection then pursued his career in media and launched his popular sports talk show, after a massive deal with ESPN. This did not sit well with many, and McAfee landed in the hot seat. Things escalated with the appearance of former Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers.
The New York Post opened the can of worms when they reported in October 2023, that Rodgers rakes in “more than seven figures per year” just for his weekly “Aaron Rodgers Tuesdays” appearances on Pat McAfee’s show. While ESPN insists they have no creative control over the show, it is licensed to the network, and McAfee himself is a staple of College GameDay. This has led to some grumbling among ESPN employees, particularly about McAfee’s contract and the rumor that he’s shelling out over $1 million annually to Rodgers. And how could the analyst be okay with it?

McAfee immediately fired back a shot at ESPN and said, “All the suits at ESPN that told [the New York Post] to write this article to make us look bad. Your time is coming.” More than a year later, Stephen A. Smith broke his silence, taking McAfee’s side.
Talking to CNBC’s Alex Sherman earlier this week, Smith hinted at a clear bias that ESPN holds for the analyst. He stated, “No, [I don’t understand the irritation]. I think they’re being immature…But, understand the business, Pat McAfee is not an employee of ESPN. They basically bought his product, and they said they leased his show, and it’s his baby — that’s what it is.” After all, he is inspired by the blueprint that McAfee has set by exploring scopes as an analyst, something beyond the confines of sport.
Notably, this is not the first time that Smith has taken his colleague’s side. On another occasion in February last year, the veteran broadcaster had said on Bussin’ with the Boys podcast, “I love Pat McAfee, love him to death. I love his swag; I love the fact that he’s an honest brother. He don’t give a s—… That’s my kind of dude.”
