Has Jeremiah Smith truly outshined Travis Hunter, or is the Biletnikoff race still wide open?

An unprecedented feat in Buckeye history. WR Jeremiah Smith of OSU was outstanding in a 31-7 victory over Northwestern, achieving his 3rd 100-yard catching game as a freshman. Smith recorded four catches for 100 yards throughout the game and took part in an impressive but controversial play. However, his play aided the OSU in winning the game at Wrigley Field. This is something that would be appreciated. But the entire CFB community is surprised by Travis Hunter being left in the shadows by him.

Yes, as per fans’ vote regarding the 2024 Biletnikoff Award, Hunter is trailing behind Jeremiah. As per the voting ratio, Jeremiah has a 31.47% chance of winning the award, whereas Travis Hunter, Colorado’s wide receiver, has a 17.26% chance of winning. If you are not aware, a nationwide selection committee made up of more than 600 journalists, pundits, broadcasters, and former athletes chooses the winner of the prize. Interestingly, the organization’s board of trustees’ members abstain from voting. Instead of focusing on potential or prior accomplishments, the selection criteria highlight actual performance during the season.

This season, Hunter has averaged 12.3 yards per reception based on offensive performance, recording 74 receptions for 911 yards and 9 touchdowns. In addition, he has recorded 20 tackles, two interceptions, and a forced fumble on defense. Conversely, with 49 recorded receptions, 865 receiving yards, an average of 17.7 yards per reception, and nine touchdowns, Smith is sixth in the nation in terms of receiving touchdowns. It indicates Smith has left behind Travis in the race of Biletnikoff.

Safe to say, every year, the best receiver in American collegiate football, regardless of position, receives the Biletnikoff Award. Named for Fred Biletnikoff, a former player for the Oakland Raiders and FSU, it was founded in 1994 by the TQCF (Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation). The purpose of the award is to honor brilliance in all pass-catching positions, including running backs, tight ends, and wide receivers.

The winner of this prize is still up in the air, though, as the voting poll is still open. However, the most recent information regarding Jeremiah’s injury has been made public. Let’s investigate it.

On November 16, Smith suffered an ankle injury during the Buckeyes’ most recent game versus Northwestern. He was tackled after completing a huge 68-yard catch-and-run and seemed to stagger up. Fans were worried about possible foul play after the incident involving Northwestern defender Robert Fitzgerald, who had been accused of bending Smith’s ankle during the tackle.

Smith was observed jogging on the sidelines to assess the condition of his left ankle after it was re-taped. He did feel some discomfort, according to reports, but it doesn’t seem like the injury will prevent him from playing in future games. He soon resumed playing, following the incident. He is now anticipated to be available for the upcoming game against Indiana, but as the team advances in the season, his condition should be closely watched. Let’s wait and watch the outstanding performance against the Hoosiers in the upcoming matchup.
