Can Oregon's rich quarterback legacy sway Sagapolutele away from Georgia's national powerhouse allure?

Eight straight victories for Dan Lanning! The Oregon Ducks are dominating their opponents this season. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel has been a key factor in this success, making significant contributions on the field. As a Heisman Trophy contender, Gabriel is on cloud nine after another strong performance in a recent victory. The Ducks are making headlines not only with their back-to-back victories but also because of their recruiting process.

Four-star quarterback Jaron Keawe-Sagapolutele attended the game against Illinois. But he has already committed to Cal since July 8. Yes! However, the Ducks’ performance this year has been outstanding. Does that mean Sagapolutele is reconsidering his decision? As the college football season heats up, the recruiting process is becoming increasingly competitive and challenging. Even the big programs like Georgia are getting ditched! Similarly, it looks like other SEC programs are vouching for Sagapolutele.

In the latest video of the YouTube channel On3 Recruits insider Josh Newberg reflects on the strategic efforts of the Oregon coaching staff to recruit four-star quarterback Jaron Keawe-Sagapolutele. “Seeing that Sagapolutele is all the way out in Hawaii, you had to make it work with his schedule. But he’s on a bye, so the staff acted quickly and got him out to Eugene for his official visit. All the early returns are that this one’s going really well, and Dillon Gabriel had himself a very strong performance on Saturday, throwing for three touchdowns and nearly 300 yards. I think it’s going to be tough for another school to push Oregon in this one, but it seems like Georgia is the one we are spotlighting moving forward.”

Though he has already committed to the Golden Bears, his strong senior-year performance is still attracting multiple offers. And one of the most recent was from Lanning, as the Oregon Ducks are trying to flip multiple recruits in 2025, such as Vander Ploog and Andrew Olesh. Even before the visit happened, Sagapolutele had one clear goal in mind, which was “to take as much information in as” he could.

As of now, the Ducks have eligible quarterbacks in the pipeline, like Dante Moore and Akili Smith, but with Dillion Gabriel likely moving to the NFL, they may be out to look for other options for the coming seasons. Additionally, the Ducks have a rich history of quarterbacks from Hawaii, including Dillion Gabriel and Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota, which is something that the recruit is fond of. The 4-star who once idolized him has broken Gabriel’s Hawaii state record for all-purpose yards during his high school career.

Although Sagapolutele visited Oregon’s recent game, he has still not made any final decisions. That means Oregon cannot take a breath of relief. After losing five-star recruits last week, Kirby Smart’s team is looking to fill the empty spot. “We need to keep an eye on that because he got that offer earlier this week and didn’t waste any time setting an official visit there for, I believe, November 16th. So Oregon got him on campus before Georgia and certainly has distance on their side, along with a bunch of other factors. I still like Oregon here for Sagapolutele, but you’ve got to keep an eye on it.”

There are reports of Sagapolutele’s growing interest in Georgia, as the sources suggest that the quarterback is “heavily considering” flipping to the Bulldogs following the scholarship offer. But this is further complicated by two reasons. One is his longstanding relationship with Cal’s coaching staff. And the other is that Georgia’s recent quarterback depth concern, paired with its reputation as a national powerhouse, may be enough to sway the youngster’s commitment.

Dillon Gabriel: Each week is important

He threw for three touchdowns and added another on the ground, leading the Ducks to a 38-9 dominating victory. The result speaks for the Ducks offensive line. Only two narrow victories for the Ducks so far; otherwise, the offensive side has delivered in all the games. Coming back to Gabriel’s performance, he completed 18 out of 26 passes for 291 yards.

ESPN reported Gabriel’s statement after the game, “Each week is important within itself.” He added, “I think you’ve got to live that life of being present. It’s very easy to say and hard to do.” Moving forward, as Gabriel stated, every week is important. And as Oregon prepares for its upcoming game, the focus shifts to four-star quarterback Jaron Keawe-Sagapolutele. Will he change his mind? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
