Is Dan Lanning the next Dan Campbell, or is he carving his own legendary path?

Still unbeaten! This is commendable. On top of this, according to the most recent CFP rankings, Oregon is another time at the top. If Oregon can end the season with wins, they will be unbeaten and go to the Big 10 championship game. Dan Lanning, a former assistant at Georgia, has emerged as a good head coach. Is it limited to Oregon’s current season record? Or there’s another reason. The Ducks have a 32-5 record since Lanning took over as HC at Oregon, and they are very much in the running for the national championship this year. But this time, Oregon is on edge because Dan Lanning is generating NFL buzz.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, one executive surprised everyone by mentioning Lanning’s name as a possible NFL head coach candidate and even drawing comparisons to Dan Campbell. Fowler mentioned in his X post, “The once-popular trend of plucking college head coaches for NFL jobs has slowed in recent years. All but one of the 32 sitting head coaches (Chargers’ Jim Harbaugh) came directly from an NFL job. Recent NFL failures of Urban Meyer and Matt Rhule haven’t helped the collegiate pipeline. But a league exec I trust brought up an interesting name to me this week: Oregon’s Dan Lanning,” adding, “He’s got some Dan Campbell to him.”

It seems like Dan Lanning is compared to $10 million (Dan Campbell’s net worth). However, if it comes to pass, that would be a bold move on Lanning’s part. Furthermore, the analogies to Dan Campbell are intriguing as well. Since moving to the area, the Detroit Lions coach has rapidly improved that team. And Fowler noted of the coaches, “Lanning knows how to command a room, while Campbell is currently in his own class.

Given Lanning’s successful journey in Eugene, it wouldn’t be shocking if Lanning’s name were to be announced in the NFL. But the question still stands; would Lanning think about leaving Oregon to play in the NFL?

Have an interesting take?

As of now, Lanning is in an excellent position in Oregon, where his Ducks are the top-ranked team in the country with a perfect 10-0 record. In 2022, Lanning joined Oregon and produced immediate results, guiding the Ducks to a 10-3 record. And a 12-2 record in 2023, which was highlighted by a win over Liberty in the Fiesta Bowl. Lanning received a raise and signed an agreement with Oregon in the summer of 2023, increasing his annual compensation to $7 million. And today, with some of the strongest facilities and recruiting skills in the nation, Oregon is a top team.

It is already mentioned Rhule and Meyer are recent failures, so the college-to-NFL pipeline hasn’t worked well. However, Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh has had a fantastic start, according to Fowler. And Lanning is currently in Oregon, where the Ducks are vying for a national championship. Therefore, that might be a name to keep an eye on. But his NFL career is still up in the air. Let’s see what happens at the end of this season.
