The Florida Gators are in a fix, especially after their game against Texas A&M, where they lost 33-20. As the situation with Billy Napier gets warmer, some rumors link the Ole Miss coach, Lane Kiffin, to the position of the head coach of the Florida squad. The Napier’s Gators started the season with a stingy 1-2 record, and the pressure was simmering and the locker room anything but serene.

Looking back at his journey, the same coach, Clay Helton, only has poignant words of appreciation to the Kiffin who played a role in shaping him. He remembers that Lane Kiffin interviewed him for the position of the Trojans’ quarterbacks coach in 2010 when he was sleeping on the couch and Monte arrived at the scene to offer him this job. And now, when Helton gets ready to go against the Kiffins on Saturday when Georgia Southern plays at No. 5 Ole Miss, he re-emphasizes that the relationship “will carry on that relationship forever,” showing the bond that he has with them.

Florida fans are growing impatient after wide receiver Eugene Wilson III ignited the fire of the ‘Fire Napier’ campaign after dropping a like on the Reddit post. Simply put, it will not be cheap to go for a buyout and end the association with Napier at a cost of about $26 million; however, it is looking more probable with each poor performance.

Lane Kiffin—of course, this name keeps on coming up as the likely successor. When a team, like the Gators, is struggling with their season, Kiffin comes with an office genius as a prolific offense expert. However, for all the stories that circulated him, Kiffin appears content with his station—catching a No. 5 ranked Ole Miss. Many claim that currently Kiffin has a better position with Ole Miss. Let’s take, for instance, the words of Rece Davis from ESPN: “You can’t ignore the obvious… Lane Kiffin has a better job right now.” With the wins piling up, Kiffin appears to be in the sweet spot in Oxford.

Lane Kiffin rumors: Will they ever go away?

So, what is so special about the Florida speculation then? Well, the Gators need it, and Florida is a well-known brand in college football. It is not hard to see why Florida boosters would be looking at Kiffin. He brings energy, a high-powered offense, and a lot of attitude to any program he is part of. Kiffin himself has not gone out of his way to respond to the rumors much, probably knowing that such talk is part and parcel of the business.

Yet why would the staff of Ole Miss opt for Florida? The Rebels are successful, and Kiffin has total authority over the team. According to Davis, the statement went: “He makes decisions… Lane has a better job.” Florida, however, has not been very successful in recent years, and its boosters are quite critical. Even though there is nothing quite as exciting as rebuilding a program like Florida at the moment, Kiffin seems to be satisfied with the Rebels. So long as Ole Miss is winning, the constant speculation about Kiffin’s coaching future may persist ad infinitum, but nothing is going to deter the Rebels.

At the end of the day, Florida’s woes aren’t Kiffin’s concern—for now. For now, he will get back to working on taking Ole Miss to new heights, and the Gator fans can only hope for their next big hire like him. But if Kiffin’s history—the true history—teaches us anything, it is that you can never say never when it comes to college football.
