Deion Sanders is finally getting some support! After giving some cold shoulders and criticism to the media, a veteran quarterback has stepped up to back him.
Coach Prime’s tense relationship with the press hit a peak on August 9th, during his birthday press conference. The whole PC turned into a whirlwind when Sanders snubbed two reporters, sparking backlash. When CBS reporter Eric Christensen tried to ask a question, Deion bluntly responded, “CBS, I’m not doing nothing with CBS. Next question,” shutting him down. He gave similar treatment to Denver Post’s Sean Keeler, saying he wouldn’t answer someone who “really hates” him.
As expected, this behavior didn’t sit well with many. But amidst the controversy, former quarterback Cam Newton has voiced his support for Deion. On his August 14th podcast, Newton, after watching the press conference clip, said with a smile, “I like it,” seemingly approving Deion’s actions. He added, “Man, right, I’m doubling down on that. See, the thing about media is this… everybody wants to be the first to report. That don’t mean their report is accurate.”

The NFL MVP pointed out how the media often creates these situations, suggesting that the Buffs HC’s reaction was justified. Newton stressed, “Everybody wants to be the first to report, not knowing the collateral damage that comes with that report.” He criticized the lack of penalties for such actions, asking, “When are we gonna hold people accountable for the things that they say, things that they report, things that they blog?”

It’s more than just rankings for Deion Sanders
When the media snub controversy broke, many wondered what was going on between CBS Sports and Deion Sanders. A quick search would show that CBS ranked Deion as the second-worst coach in the Big 12 and even placed him 61st among all CFB coaches. While some thought this was the reason for Coach Prime’s outburst, On3’s Philip Dukes offered a different perspective.

“Deion is not mad because of that ranking… there was an abuse of trust between the two, and I’m sure that will be expounded upon later on,” Dukes explained. He also noted that after snubbing the CBS reporter, Deion mentioned he had nothing but “love” for him, suggesting the issue is with the organization, not the individual. Even Deion himself reposted Dukes’ words, giving him a shoutout.
Meanwhile, Deion’s friend Shannon Sharpe also came to his defense. On his Nightcap podcast, Sharpe said, “Deion has some choice,” and supported Deion’s response to the situation. He added that only a strong season, like going 10-2 or 9-3, would silence the critics once and for all. Now, the big question is, can Deion Sanders prove his doubters wrong in the Big 12 this season?
