Nick Saban's 'rat poison' tactics—Genius strategy or just another mind game? What's your take?

“Overrated” That is what Paul Finebaum had claimed that Kalen DeBoer and the boys at Crimson Tides were. When DeBoer took over the HC role, many had assumed that he wouldn’t be able to do the team justice. Heck, even Nick Saban mentioned that he expects to see Georgia and Texas in the SEC Championship and the whole internet lost their minds. How could the former HC of the Crimson Tide not promote his team? Back on July 20th when we had covered the fan theories regarding the entire scene, one fan had the perfect theory when he said that Saban was doing this to “light a fire underneath Alabama”.

Whoever that guy was, he was telling the truth cause on August 23rd we just got the confirmation from the man himself that he was using it as a tactic to help his former team out. On the Pat McAfee show, Nick Saban explains, “I picked Georgia and Texas because it’s reverse rat poison for Alabama.” The entire stunt was done to motivate Kalen DeBoer and the Tides to give it their best this year. It ain’t no doubt that DeBoer is the guy you call to get things done. We all saw how he revamped Sioux Falls and the team went on to win 3 national championship wins. His performance with the Huskies was also noteworthy and QB Michael Penix Jr also managed to land on a runner-up spot for the Heisman Trophy. Joel Klatt explained it perfectly on his show. He noted that DeBoer was, “one of the most successful coaches in college football.” The guy has experience. He has been in more than 100 games and has helped teams return from the ashes.

Under him, the Tides currently have the best offensive lineup in the country. Not only that, the team has also shown considerable progress in their overall skill. Back during the scrimmage, we saw Ryan Williams putting in some solid work. DeBoer even noted that the defense was also looking strong with Keon Sabb and Malachi Moore leading it. However, what will get the Tides an amazing run during this season is DeBoer’s secret weapon.

DeBoer and Milroe

When Nick Saban was heading the Tides, Milroe had already shown immense promise. the kid managed to grab around 20+ TDs and more than 3200 yards last season. However, the big change happened when DeBoer took over. Being an offensive mind, DeBoer could perfectly pair up with Milroe. Back with Saban, the QBs overall accuracy was hovering around 55-60. Ever since he started practices with DeBoer, he has reached a peak of 70-75%.

We even saw a glimpse of this improvement during the scrimmage when Milroe landed a 50-yard TD. The kid is already regarded as the next Heisman contender from Alabama. So, it makes sense that Saban has complete faith in his former team. With the players that are currently on the roster, the Tides are going to swallow everything whole.
