Is Nick Saban right to urge Tua's family to rethink his NFL career after multiple concussions?

It’s a sad day all around for the NFL and especially for the Dolphins since their star QB has suffered the third concussion of his career. The worst part? All the past 3 concussions have occurred in the past 24 months. During the Dolphins’ game against the Buffalo Bills, Tua sustained the injury after clashing with Damar Hamlin, the Bulss’ DB. With such serious concerns regarding his well-being, questions are being raised over whether Tua should ever play again. As the world of the NFL crucially debates this topic, here’s what his former head coach in college, Nick Saban had to say.

On the 13th September episode of the Pat McAfee show, Nick Saban sat down in an interview to talk about all things football and then later dove deep into the injury of Tua Tagovailoa. The former HC for Alabama expressed grave concern for his former QB and spoke on how his head injury should be given the medical green flag rather than anyone else’s decisions.

Saban spoke about how he hasn’t had a chance to speak to Tua yet but plans to do that soon. He further elaborated on how his future in football should be a “medical decision” and said, “But I think this has to be a medical decision. I mean, you have to let medical people who understand the circumstances around these injuries, these concussions. When you have multiple concussions, that’s not a good sign. And I think Tua and his family and everyone else should really listen to all the medical evidence to make sure that you’re not compromising your future health-wise by continuing to play football. But I think that’s a medical decision. I don’t think that’s for me or anyone else to speculate.”

Thus, everyone wishes for a speedy recovery for the Miami Dolphins QB, including Saban, and hopefully, he gets to make a return to the gridiron super soon. With that being said, let’s take a look at what other coaches in the NFL had to say about the dire situation of Tagovailoa.

NFL coaches weigh in on Tua’s severe injuries

Doug Pederson, the HC for the Jacksonville Jaguars, talked about how the team needs to value the player’s needs over everything else. He mentioned the “human side” of the NFL and said how everyone wants to play and give it their best but sometimes, the dark reality of football ends up getting the bigger end of the stick.

Is Nick Saban right to urge Tua's family to rethink his NFL career after multiple concussions?

Have an interesting take?

Antonio Pierce, the HC for the Las Vegas Raiders, had a bigger reaction to offer in this case. Pierce’s immediate thoughts went to Tua’s retirement and highlighted how “it’s not worth it.” Speaking on the incident during the game itself, Pierce added, “Scary. You could see right away; the players’ faces on the field. You could see the sense of urgency from everybody to get Tua help. I just think at some point, he’s going to live longer than he’s going to play football. Take care of your family.”

There are no doubts about the fact that Tua is one of the most phenomenal players to exist in the current generation of the NFL, but at what point does he start to consider prioritizing life over a sport that continues to threaten his well-being?
