Home/College Football

Some players are just built differently, and Travis Hunter is one of them. Whether he’s locking down receivers as a cornerback or making highlight reel plays as a wideout, Hunter is a rare talent who can do it all. His versatility, athleticism, and playmaking ability have already made him a star at Colorado under Deion Sanders. But as his college career unfolds, one big question looms—how will his game translate to the NFL? And more importantly, should he stick to one position in the NFL or keep doing both?

With draft analysts displaying a lack of confidence in the 2025 QB class, there appears to be a consensus on two generational talents. Abdul Carter and Travis Hunter. Carter’s power at the edge doesn’t come that often. He is a once-in-a-while talent, a true leader. On the other hand, you have a once-in-a-generation talent. 1258 receiving yards, 15 touchdowns. 36 tackles, 4 interceptions. Simply elite at both the positions. What will suit him the best in the NFL? EJ Snyder had some thoughts on the same.

“It’s absolute insanity if you know any of the backstory, so he was a defensive guy at Colorado. I think the consensus here is you, as a rookie in the NFL, start him at corner because both game plans are denser and harder to pick up; it’s really not fair to saddle a guy up with a full meal deal of both. Start him as a corner because he’s exceptional there as well, give him a package of plays, and let that grow through time.”

Well, starting Hunter at cornerback seems like the safest bet, right? But how does one ignore his offensive playmaking? For now, the real question is—will an NFL team be willing to let him redefine what’s possible at the next level?

With all the talk about his future, Hunter has finally weighed in on the next step. He recently shared an update on whether he’ll be showcasing his talents at the NFL Combine, adding another layer to the conversation about his pro potential. Well, the Heisman Trophy winner has made it clear he won’t be working out at the Combine. Hunter also said it’s up to whichever team drafts him to decide his position, but he hopes to play both ways.

While Hunter won’t be working out at the Combine, that hasn’t stopped NFL teams from taking a serious interest in him. One coach in particular took the opportunity to meet with him in Indianapolis and shared some intriguing insights about their conversation. Could this be a sign of what’s to come for Hunter at the next level?

Mike Vrabel met with Travis Hunter at Indianapolis

Even without working out, Hunter is still one of the biggest names at the Combine—and NFL teams are paying attention. And why not? Patriots HC Mike Vrabel, for one, made sure to get some time with him in Indianapolis, and let’s just say he had plenty to share. Vrabel, who played both offense and defense during his NFL career, could relate to Hunter’s rare versatility.

“I’m sure Travis doesn’t even know, but we were kind of jawing back and forth as he left last night. And I said, ‘You’re not the only one that played two ways. There were some other guys that did this, too.’ He kind of looked at me and we laughed,” Vrabel recalled.

It was a lighthearted moment, but coming from a guy who thrived as both a linebacker and a red-zone threat in the NFL, the message was clear—playing both ways at the next level isn’t impossible. And with Vrabel now in New England as a key part of the Patriots coaching staff, could this interaction be the first sign of Hunter making his way to Foxborough?
