Home/College Football

Is Travis Hunter a CB or a WR? A debate that keeps the 21-year-old relevant in the CFB community. It continues to escalate with the pace we are inching toward the draft day. Fans and veterans have already propagated the belief that it is a fantasy to imagine Hunter contributing to both sides of the ball in the NFL. After rumors started circulating that the two-way star was only listed as a corner for the NFL Combine, Hunter dismissed the notion and bashed the fans for spreading false information a few days back. Now at Indianapolis for the Combine, the standout Colorado star chooses to clear the air on the quintessential WR/CB debate in a playful esque.

The ability to turn tides at both sides of the ball made Travis a can’t-miss guy, a widely projected No. 1 pick in the NFL. But in a contradictory reality, the NFL works differently than college football. The sheer toll playing both sides may take on one’s body is unimaginable. But irrespective of all the senses and logic, Deion Sanders and his favorite boy have made their intention clear several times. He is still listed at both and ready to unleash his dual-threat magic on the ground. ‘‘I’m going to play both,” Travis Hunter said. “That’s not my job to figure it out. I’d like to play both sides of the ball. If they give me the opportunity to play both sides, I’m playing both sides.”

To make things more clear, the Colorado star started a fun segment on social media with a subtle statement saying, “I’m the only one to do this one,” before he introduced himself briefly. In an ‘either-or’ game, Hunter had to choose between several things. The first question prompted him to clarify what he would choose between a defensive touchdown and an offensive score. Hunter opted for the first because they are rare to come by. When asked whether he’d silence the crowd as a DB or a WR, he said he would prefer to do it as a defensive back.

The next question had Travis Hunter brainstorm a little as he had to reminisce about his best play in his entire career, to which he said, “That’s good because my best play is on the defensive side of the ball, but when I was in high school, my best play was on the offensive side of the ball. My DB one was Baylor, overtime, when I forced a fumble. The offense is in high school; when I jumped over the top of somebody and caught the ball on the top of his head, it was crazy.”

When asked which position he would be more comfortable trash-talking in, Hunter shared that it was probably wide receiver, but usually, he doesn’t like to talk trash on the field. But when it comes to getting honored and having a crown, he would like to be both Offensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive ROTY and would rather play both sides than choose one.

The message is clear once again. But that’s just not it. The two-way prodigy hints at another position he won’t mind playing at all if needed to prove his versatility at any point in his career.

Can Travis Hunter truly dominate both sides in the NFL, or is it just wishful thinking?

Have an interesting take?

Will Travis Hunter eye a third position amidst the boiling WR?CB debate?

We didn’t see how the Colorado gem freaks the scouts out in the interview room this weekend. But Hunter made sure to give us a glimpse. I mean, it was more than obvious. Keeping aside his lofty numbers, the thing that makes him stand out in the crowd is his intelligence and wit.

Hunter indicated that in the interview room, coaches had asked him about the most controversial debate: his dual-side talent and how much he is confident of performing in the games. He tried to convince them that he could nail it totally. In fact, he said that he can perform anywhere on the field, taking his draft stock’s value to the next level. “I’d play quarterback. I could throw the ball, actually, so I’ll play quarterback. I could be a QB,” Travis Hunter said on his podcast.

The kid has already endured a lot of hate throughout his storied stint at Colorado and beyond. A chunk of people still believe he doesn’t deserve the hype he gets. They even called out the NFL to highlight his snaps and try to showcase it as a quality in a recent hype video. He chose to fuel the wrath even more, dropping an honest and blunt take on MLB superstar Shohei Ohtani. He said he feels Othani is a great player, but in football, he would have to do a lot. But above all the flakes, it’s Travis Hunter! He hates to fight the internet but feels all at home to fight opponents on the field and let his numbers speak.
