Notre Dame’s quarterback competition is smoking hot. But things are not hitting any conclusion anytime soon. Steve Angeli, Kenny Minchey, and CJ Carr have split the reps as equally as possible through Notre Dame’s first set of spring practices, making it a bit challenging for head coach Marcus Freeman to make up his mind. He also isn’t the type of guy to make hasty decisions. Rather, he loves to take his time to observe and analyse every minute detail before handing out the key to his offense. But the clock is ticking fast, and the path forward for the Lions seems to be clogged…

Freeman has already said at the start of the Spring that he couldn’t be sure of a timeline by when the Irish can get their new QB1 on the helm of the offense. He said that the coaches can’t make it a hard and fast rule. Sometimes, it depends on the players’ availability and ability to bring out their best. “As soon as there’s a clear starter, we’ll name a clear starter,” Freeman pulled the rug from an early QB answer. But it seems he has a secret time bomb fit to explode.

It’s really necessary to come to a clean, concise decision regarding your quarterback conundrum when your schedule is showing a red eye. After Riley Leonard moved to the pro, Notre Dame’s runner-up potential, heading to a new season, seemed to be in severe jeopardy. Fairly clear. You need a guy under the center to make match-winning throws, come up with twisting decisions, and handle a lot of pressure to chisel out the best out of the team. It’s a blow to your confidence when you’re running faster toward a season without a clear name in your head.

Freeman earned huge national respect, making it to the top two in a historic redemption. But it won’t enter the 2025 course of battle as a favorite to win it all. But at least the playoff mark? That can be a balanced aim, right? But that, too, demands an urgent way out of your position battles since the schedule isn’t delivering. Explaining the grisly task, NBC Sports’ Joshua Perry said, “The big issue, looking ahead, is that the schedule is rough to start the year early. So they’ve got to figure these things out to the leadership and the rotations and who’s going to be their guy. Like, they got to figure all those things out pretty early. But I do think they’re in a position to have it all figured out by the time the season starts.”

They will kick off the season on August 31 against Miami, followed by the Aggies on Sept 13. Miami is going to be a blazing and massive game to start your year. You need a good amount of time to prepare to face the Canes and avoid an early heartbreak. That’s all right in the place. But the thing is, the present circumstance in the Irish locker room triggers the QB decision’s delay even more.

Marcus Freeman gets another excuse to be late in his QB verdict

Notre Dame is undergoing pretty common woes in the mix. The injury galore heavily sunken down their morals amidst the Spring buzz. A slew of guys have been worn out on the sidelines.

On Wednesday, Tyler Wojciak joined Jamie Uyeyama on the Locked on Irish podcast to discuss Notre Dame’s situation. He said, “Notre Dame’s offensive line was already dealing with injuries. We’ve learned that tackle Guerby Lambert suffered a torn labrum, and he’s not going to be back until the fall. So, these quarterbacks are working with like the twos and threes. Even if they’re going out there with the ones, like Notre Dame’s offensive line is just so depleted at this point. How much does the state of the offensive line affect the decision about who will be the starting quarterback?”

Lambert underwent a strenuous shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum. While Freeman said he is expected to be back in the fall, the air of tension prevails heavily. Offensive lineman Charles Jagusah is currently on the shelf after taking a blow to his right foot. Jeremiah Love, one of the premium running backs for the Irish, who led the team in rushing yards last season, is down with a right hamstring injury. It’s still up in the air when he will revert to full health, but Freeman promises to be smart and precise in the thorough observation.

Is Notre Dame's QB dilemma a ticking time bomb for their 2025 playoff hopes?

Have an interesting take?

All these factors will make the QB dilemma even worse. “I mean, it definitely has an impact. I think from that perspective, too. It ultimately delays when they were. Just to say, I don’t think they were going to make a decision by the end of spring. But it makes it impossible,” Jamie U spilled the bitter reality for Freeman. But he has to find a middle ground and put his roster in the right place before the season calls for.
