Seven losses and Sooners’s season is falling apart. This is the same team that shut down Alabama, holding them to just 3 points—now they’re struggling to stay competitive. The main culprit behind the team’s struggles lies in the shaky offensive line, which fails to provide the offense with a fair opportunity. Analysts are urging John Mateer to intervene promptly and address this issue before it escalates further. If the offensive line fails to show improvement, there’s a real risk of Oklahoma’s next season taking a rapid turn from bad to worse.

Is Oklahoma making a bowl game for 26 years straight? Sure, that’s great, but let’s be real, that streak doesn’t reflect the Oklahoma football people grew up on. This isn’t the same program that started dominating under Benny Owens’ supervision in the 1890s. And now two losing seasons in the last three years? Surprising, given their flawless record in the 21st century until recently. Surprising, right? It looks like the Oklahoma Sooners are losing their touch in the game.

And their loss against the Navy adds more fuel to this fire that even Yahoo Sports analyst RJ Young couldn’t hold himself up and urged quarterback John Mateer to step up and do something for the team, saying, “John Mateer, this is your job now. Your job is to make sure this does not happen. This is it. That’s your job. The last time Oklahoma was this bad, they didn’t have a quarterback. The same is true this year, except Oklahoma thought it had a quarterback in Jackson Arnold.”Jackson Arnold was one of the Sooners’ gems, but his hitting the transfer portal and joining the Auburn Tigers is nothing less than a misery for the team.

Well, John Mateer is the no. 1 player in the transfer portal from Washington State, and the Sooners made a pretty impressive move by getting him into the team. Why? Because he is the only one after Arnold who can save the team’s falling offense. As Mateer records, he speaks for himself.

This dude has thrown for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns and rushed for 826 yards and 15 scores. In other words, he is exactly the dual-threat replica Oklahoma was looking for after Arnold’s exit. But the question is, will his entry into the team be able to revive the last impression the team left on everyone’s mind with their miserable performance?

Oklahoma’s epic failure

It’s surprising to see Oklahoma blowing up their only chance to end a disappointing season on a high note, and a strong win against the Navy is the only thing they need the most. But even that seemed hard for the team. It’s a big misery for the Sooners, but if you see the way Navy pulled up their game through a match that was almost out of their hands, man, Oklahoma was this close to going up 21-0 in the second quarter, but only if Navy let it remain an easy ride. The team pulled off a huge fourth-down stop in the red zone and flipped the momentum of the game. Crazy, right?

That was the turning point of the Sooners’ fate. From there, the Navy just kept scoring one touchdown in each of the last three quarters to take control of the game. Their defense did its thing and made it impossible for the Sooners’ offense to score any further. However, there came a time when Oklahoma had a shot to tie the game with a late touchdown, but they went for two instead of the extra point and totally botched it. But who’s responsible for all this mess?

Brent Venables shoulders the responsibility, and even he seems disappointed in himself and the team, as he says, “Obviously, everything falls on me; we’re dropping it, not converting fourth down, missing field goals…. Everything falls at my feet. Really disappointed in myself. I need to be a lot better.” But then what can he even do if players hit the transfer portals just before a crucial bowl game?

The Sooners’ offense was pretty off, but then with offensive lineman Joshua Bates, Eugene Brooks, and most importantly their star player Jackson Arnold out of the team, this is the only outcome anyone should expect from the team. Next season will show if Brent Venables can lead a resurgence or if he’ll be let go as the stakes are high, with every team fiercely competing for success.
