Georgia’s G-Day gave fans a glimpse of what 2025 might look like. The Red team, led by Gunner Stockton, rolls to a 34-17 win over the Black squad. It was one of those games that started slow, but the highly expected QB1 lit it up in the second half.
Gunner Stockton racked up 309 yards and two TDs. Yeah, there’s an interception in there, but 17 of 34 passing? Not bad at all. He was in control. Calm. Like he’s been here before. Probably because he has been there—four springs deep into the Bulldogs’ system. He knows every drill, every install, every Kirby Smart’s glare. So there’s not much left for suspense, huh? But who knows…
On April 15, Adam Breneman delved into Georgia’s QB battle of sorts in a new On3 episode. “It really feels like it’s Gunner Stockton’s job,” he admitted. “Maybe we call it a quarterback battle because it’s Kirby Smart, and there’s always going to be a battle for every position regardless of who you are.” He went on to hype Gunner Stockton’s G-Day performance and also his resilience in the CFP semifinals against Notre Dame. Take that play against Marcus Freeman‘s squad. After filling in for Carson Beck in the SEC Championship game against Texas, he found his first start in the Sugar Bowl. He took a beating, four sacks, two fumbles, but he kept getting up, completing 20 of 32 passes for 234 yards and one TD. The Dawgs might’ve lost 23-10 to the Irish, but the locker room was impressed with the leader Gunner Stockton turned out to be.
That kind of grit doesn’t go unnoticed, whether it’s a fresher or a veteran. Even WR Zachariah Branch, who transferred to Athens from USC on January 5, said, “I knew he was a dog since we started off in the workouts. I can tell easily from the work ethic and how you prepare yourself to go out there and be the best version of yourself.” And junior TE Lawson Luckie didn’t hold back on his admiration for Gunner Stockton’s resilience either. “He’s clearly got the locker room,” Adam Breneman added. “There’s a high trust factor from the staff and from the locker room, and I think that’s extremely important when you have as much talent at Georgia as you do.” His quiet leadership’s got the whole team leaning. But now, let’s switch the QB gears.

Ryan Puglisi’s right behind Gunner Stockton
While Gunner Stockton may have the edge today, don’t sleep on Ryan Puglisi. The kid’s young, raw, and still learning, but he’s not running from the fight. And that’s rare these days “in a world where guys are hitting the portal like it’s their job,” as Breneman said. “I had some people ask me this weekend in Georgia quarterback Ryan Puglisi, and I am told that there is a ‘zero percent’ chance he moves on,” Dawgs insider Rusty Mansell told On3.
“I am also told that schools were definitely trying to gauge his interest, but talked with a source close to this, and Puglisi is at UGA to compete for this job. He likes where he is and plans to stick around.”
Ryan Puglisi is a Dawg through and through. And Kirby Smart is definitely taking notice of that too. “Ryan’s done a good job. Ryan continues to get better since it’s his first spring,” he said. At G-Day, he split reps between Red and Black, mostly with the latter, going 20 of 46 for 172 yards, one TD, and a pick. So yeah, the QB battle is a tough call to make. As veteran RB Cash Jones puts it—“Whoever it is, I believe in both of them.”

So here we are. Georgia’s got two QBs, both with upside, both locked in. One’s got the locker room, the other’s got the hunger. But if you ask around Athens, this thing might already be decided. Gunner Stockton might be their 2025 guy!
