The Michigan Wolverines are experiencing a disappointing recruiting season. Despite offering a substantial NIL deal of around $10.5 million, the team couldn’t lure Bryce Underwood away from the LSU Tigers. As a result, they are now at risk of losing players who have already pledged to join the team. Yes, you read that correctly. Michigan may potentially lose a highly regarded four-star prospect if Penn State’s head coach, James Franklin, makes his big move.

On November 18, Penn State insider Lyle Alenstein took to X to share their head coach, James Franklin’s smart move of lurking Michigan’s four-star tight end, Andrew Olesh, by delivering a thinly concealed recruiting pitch that says, “If you’re a great tight end in the country and particularly in the state of Pennsylvania, I don’t know how you couldn’t come here.” Well, Olesh could be one of the biggest offensive weapons for Sherrone Moore’s team, and if coach Franklin’s words even make a small impact on his mind, Michigan will lose him.

Moreover, Penn State is already emerging as one of the top programs this season. Not only is the team on a roll this year with their 8-1 record this season, but they are also ranked at the No. 4 position in the Week 2 playoff projection. This can be an added advantage for them to win Andrew Olesh’s commitment over the Michigan Wolverines. Given their struggles this season, Andrew might even reconsider his pledge to the team.

Is Andrew Olesh preparing for a switch?

Well, the Michigan Wolverines are already going through a tough year in terms of their gameplay in the season, and losing their hope to build a better roster for next year is the last thing Sherrone Moore would have thought. However, it looks like Andrew Olesh is getting tempted by other prestigious programs, which is not a good sign for Moore and the team. A few days back, Michigan’s recruiting reporter EJ Holand, on his podcast, revealed a very shocking fact about Andrew’s family having connections with the Penn State team and also spoke about the teams that might give tough competition to Michigan.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Michigan's recruiting strategy failing, or is Penn State just playing the game better?

Have an interesting take?

Holand said, “The contenders here are Oregon. Penn State and Notre Dame. So, Penn State is the home state school; they’ve gotten him on campus a few times over the last year, including once this fall. I think that you know, with them being closer to home and his father having gone to Penn State, they’re definitely in the mix.”

If this is the case, it will surely change the landscape of Michigan’s recruiting dynamics. But the team still has a chance to secure Andrew’s commitment with the team, as they are going to host Olesh in their upcoming game against Northwestern. And if they lose this game, they might also have to let go of Andrew Olesh from their team.
