Can Deion Sanders' Nike release rival the iconic status of Shaquille O'Neal's legacy?

Who knew Deion Sanders’ latest collaboration would bring back so many memories? The Colorado Buffaloes’ head coach has had a strong partnership with Nike for years, dating back to the 90s. It all started with iconic releases like the Nike Air Diamond Turf and Air Max DTs, and now there are countless variations.

Recently, Sanders has been giving out Nike sneakers in the Buffaloes’ colors—white, black, and gold. And this has sparked some nostalgia in college football expert Josh Pate.

On August 21st, Josh Pate, host of ‘Late Kicks,’ posted a throwback picture of Shaquille O’Neal’s classic Reebok sneakers, writing, “which reminds me…Shaq needs to dust these off.” The black-and-white sneakers, known as the ‘Shaqnosis’, originally hit the shelves in 1995 while Shaq was still a prominent star with the Orlando Magic. This design features hypnotic black concentric circles on a white base. Sounds similar to Deion’s Nike sneakers in a way, right? Well, a relaunch from the NBA legend would take the sneaker market by storm now.

Interestingly, Shaq’s classic 95′ sneakers did make a comeback in 2013 and again in 2020. However, Shaq ended his partnership with Reebok last year to make his sneakers more affordable through his own brand. While he may not recreate the exact same design, fans like Pate are hoping for something similar from Shaq’s new line.

The $45 million worth Coach Prime had a brief breakup with Nike years ago due to some ‘unsaid issues’. Later, he also partnered with Under Armour during his Jackson State days. But now, the Nike-Deion combo is back in action for good. This year, Deion Sanders released his classic ‘Air Max DT 96’ sneakers in varsity maize colorways, a nod to his Dallas Cowboys days as a cornerback. The model has returned in Colorado Buffaloes‘ colors, and Deion gave a sneak peek of three versions on his Instagram on August 21st.

The collection includes gold and white, as well as black and white colorways from his ‘Colorado Away’ line, set to hit the market in early September. There’s also a special ‘Colorado Home’ edition in black with flashy ‘Vegas Gold’. Priced around $170, these sneakers will launch just as the Big 12 season kicks off. Looks like this collab is more than just a stylish move! It’s likely to attract more eyeballs and talents alike.

Deion Sanders even mentioned to On3 last month that he plans to use these sneakers as incentives for his top players, saying, “The guys that ball, they going to get them [Nike sneakers]. Show me what you got, and I got you.” With more colorways on the way, Coach Prime seems ready to reward every star player of his with ease.
