Is Lane Kiffin's emotional win over Georgia a testament to his father's legacy?

Lane Kiffin: a great coach and a great father! You might have seen the quintessential coach crossing seas and mountains to earn his team, Ole Miss, a win. You might have seen a stadium full of psyched-up crowd taking their hats off to honor the legacy he has set, but you might not have seen a father silently awaiting his daughter’s sweet validation. Yes, we are talking about Landry Kiffin, an Ole Miss student who rushed into the field and shared a really ‘cool’ moment with dad Kiffin, adding extra flair to a much-needed Georgia win last week. While recalling the massive 28-10 success of the Rebels, the 49-year-old veteran became down home over his family, and quite rightfully so.

Caden Davis outplayed Georgia single-handedly by hitting all five of his field goals and adding an extra point. The Ole Miss offense collectively ran steady, amassing 263 yards and one touchdown through the air with another 134 yards, and a touchdown on the ground. Rebels fans couldn’t just sit back and enjoy what was happening out on the field. They rushed to the ground with 16 seconds left on the clock, forcing the officials to nix the remainder game. But the ultimate cynosure of the game hit when Landry, 19, came up and extended a warm hug to his father. ‘It’s been really awesome. I am appreciative of them.”, dad Kiffin thanked his daughter and her friends who moved to Ole Miss and embraced the team’s victory with some amazing gestures.

When Paul Finebaum asked the coach phenom if his family proximity became a reason for him to stay with the Rebels for this long, Kiffin responded, ‘I think that’s natural. Sometimes in this profession. People forget that part of it, you know, because they just see the football side, but you know that was really special at the end of the wind for her to come down, and get through all those people two times, you know, and have that hug and just say, you know, ‘pops, be really really proud of you Dad, and then just talking to her later on in the office. It was really special to have her here for that.’

Kiffin also mentioned that his son will be around the Summer next year for his high school and he couldn’t be happier about that. His other daughter, Parsley, the Volleyball-fit, is having a national signing day at USC and needs some family time. Dad Kiffin sees them all. But it’s not just the kids that stirred the rebels’ coach’s mind after he took the team to the playoff picture. Rather, Kiffin’s late father also had an instrumental role, in nudging the memory.

Coach Lane Kiffin had a higher purpose for the signature Georgia win

Success tastes sweetest when it comes to some tough tests. Kiffin took a lot for the early lackluster momentum of Ole Miss in the season. After a brutal beatdown against Kentucky Wildcats, Kiffin knew that the path to retort wouldn’t be a cakewalk. But he had to do it since his father was looking up at it from above.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Lane Kiffin's emotional win over Georgia a testament to his father's legacy?

Have an interesting take?

The Ole Miss Coach owes the win to Monte Kiffin, his departed father and a legendary name in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ coaching history. Monte’s defensive brilliance matched next to none in the NFL. And the genes make all the talk, you see. After his unfortunate death, Lane Kiffin gracefully carried the torch and continued making his mark on the Rebels’ coaching front.

Monte Kiffin used to be utterly uplifting as a dad. When Ole Miss came out short, picking up a humiliating defeat against Georgia in 2022, Monte had some kind yet deeply influential words for his son, ”You’re going to beat Georgia next year.”. The unwavering belief of a father was meant to triumph over adversity, and it did. How could Lane forget about this extremely close-to-the-heart anecdote?

”Honestly, I remember him saying after the game, ‘‘We’ll get this thing turned around. You’re going to beat Georgia next year,” Lane said, coming fresh from the blowout win. ”He always believed in me, and I guess we proved him right.”

The scoreboard failed to show the real win for a son and it’s okay because the emotion behind those tender eyes did.
