Is it the end of Florida State? Mike Norvell and the Seminoles fell even deeper after their last 36-14 loss to Miami on Saturday. With that loss, they’re now eight games and just one win (1-6 in ACC). The shocker is they won each of their regular season games last year to become the ACC champion! In addition to their grim present state, FSU faces more trouble that could affect their future.

An Instagram post by rivalsdotcom on October 28 reported a grim situation for Mike Norvell and his program as “all three of FSU’s top WR commits have now decommitted.” CJ Wiley decommitted and is yet to find another landing spot. Daylan McCutcheon flipped to Texas while Malik Clark took his commitment to South Carolina. With these three 4-star elite prospects leaving, FSU now has 0 WRs committed to their 2025 class.

CJ Wiley is No. 187 in the 2025 ESPN 300 and the latest WR to decommit from FSU. He committed earlier in January over programs like Georgia and LSU after recording 68 catches for 1,473 yards and 14 TDs last season. The announcement came less than 24 hours before the Seminoles’ loss to the Hurricanes, a game in which they piled up only 248 yards of total offense.

The first WR to decommit from FSU was Malik Clark on October 2, when the Seminoles were struggling 1-4. He chose Norvell’s program over other Carolina programs in late July and ultimately flipped to the Gamecocks. Texas native Daylan McCutcheon, who committed to FSU in July, flipped to the Longhorns on October 11, saying, “There’s no place like home.” But everyone knows why FSU doesn’t hold an attractive offer anymore.

Mike Norvell’s expensive buyout

Fans want change but change isn’t going to come easy for Florida State. Before the season kickoff, Mike Norvell signed an eight-year extension with FSU, given his prior success when he went 23-4 from 2022 to 2023. So, even if the program wants to move on from its HC after the unforeseen incompetence, it’s going to prove very costly.

What’s your perspective on:

Can FSU recover from this disastrous season, or is it the beginning of the end?

Have an interesting take?

As per USA TODAY Sports, Florida State would owe Norvell $63,778,333 if they chose to buy out his contract. An interesting thing to note is that this $63M buyout is the third highest in the nation, just behind Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer with $70,050,000 and Georgia’s Kirby Smart with $118,083,333. Could it be the playoff snub last season that tainted FSU permanently? As of now, it’s hard to envision FSU in a better position given their current plight and future dilemma.
