Has the SEC lost its edge, or is this just a temporary setback for Alabama and Tennessee?

Alabama Crimson Tide was riding high after a historic win over the Georgia Bulldogs. But their happiness was short-lived. Last weekend’s loss to Vanderbilt swiped out their hard-earned top ranking in the AP poll. And they are not the only ones going through the same situation. Look at Tennessee. Getting backlash from all over the place after its degrading loss to unranked Arkansas. Week 7 AP poll rankings came out with drastic changes from the last poll. And which teams are suffering the most? An easy guess! With that, let’s look at the latest AP poll rankings.

The AP poll rankings after week 6 games are upside down from last week’s rankings. No. 1 on the list is the Texas Longhorns after an undefeated 5-0 record. The second one is Ohio State, again with the unbeatable 5-0 record. No. 3 is Oregon with a 5-0 start. Followed by fourth-ranked Penn State with a 5-0 record. Despite losing to Alabama last week, the Georgia Bulldogs hold fifth in the AP poll.

Sixth-ranked is Miami with a 6-0 record. Alabama Crimson Tide team that was sitting at the top of the AP poll last week falls to the seventh position. Eight on the list is Tennessee with a 4-1 record. Followed by ninth-ranked Ole Miss, and last from the top ten of the top 25 rankings is Clemson.

After these rankings surfaced online, Rivals.com shared an Instagram post raising several questions on the so-called supremacy of SEC teams in college football. Is that really the case anymore? Well, the evidence suggests otherwise.

Even in terms of undefeated teams, the SEC teams do not fare well when compared to the Big 10 teams. SEC currently has only one undefeated team in the Texas Longhorns, who are also the No. 1 ranked team in the rankings. While the Bulldogs were defeated by Bama in Week 5, the Crimson Tide fell to Vanderbilt in Week 6. Big 10? Well, there are four- Indians, Penn State, Oregon and Ohio State.

This dominance isn’t limited to this season. Remember the 2023 season? Who featured in the final of the national championship? Washington Huskies and Michigan Wolverines? Two Big 10 teams. Naturally, the current national champions come from that conference. Of course, the SEC programs will point towards their popularity across the country and the size of their fanbases. Well, that dominance may not last, as Big 10 programs are here to stay.

Have an interesting take?

A black Saturday for major SEC programs and a Big 10 team going under the radar

Well, started with Missouri. The No. 9 ranked team going against a Texas A&M team that has been exposed a few times this season. There were questions about the availability of their starting quarterback, Conner Weigman. But all that got cleared. Weigman started the game, and the offense just clicked from the get-go. The Aggies had over 500 yards of offense- 276 passing yards and 230 rushing yards. Well, it hardly surprised anyone. In their last game, Missouri was taken to over time by Vanderbilt, the team that went on to shock Nick Saban’s old team.

The Crimson Tide, under Coach DeBoer, were probably hungover from their Week 5 win, and considering how it allowed Vanderbilt to do anything they wanted, the Bama defense should never be put in charge of stopping anything. Imagine going to an unranked team as the No. 1 team and giving away 40 points. DeBoer must thank the almighty that he has Jalen Milroe and Ryan Williams, or it would have been uglier. The 35-40 scorecard doesn’t tell the full story of the annihilation carried out by the Vanderbilt offense.

How can fellow SEC programs leave the Tide and Tigers fans to have a bad time on their own? Well, Tennessee joined the “fun”. Arkansas caused a major upset by beating No. 4 Vols. 19-14. The game was really close, and Arkansas scored the winning touchdown with just 1:17 left on the clock when Malachi Singleton rushed for an 11-yard touchdown. Tennessee started strong but struggled with turnovers, giving Arkansas the chance to capitalize. The Razorbacks came back to score the final 16 points, showing their toughness and vigorous defense. In the end, Arkansas’s defense held strong, stopping Tennessee from making a comeback in the last seconds. This led to an exciting celebration as fans flooded the field after the victory.

In all of this SEC mayhem, people may have forgotten about the current national champions. The Wolverines tasted their second defeat of the season and went from No. 10 to No. 24 in a single game week. That’s a rough look for Sherrone Moore. The team was undefeated last season, and the offense hasn’t yet clicked. He should thank these SEC programs that he won’t be getting as much heat from the media had he been the standalone HC to lose a game.
