And it is the battle of the underdog vs the old national champs. This being the 4th game of the season for Sherrone Moore, the stakes are sky-high. The Wolverines have already managed to disappoint the fans based on how they played against AR State. You better believe the fans are gonna rip apart the coaching staff if they lose against the Trojans. However, it looks like Sherrone Moore and his boys are going to have some unfair advantage.
The fans have spotted it; the referees are favoring Moore’s team and ignoring key penalties. Michigan Podcast was quick to point on X that the referees are missing calls on both sides. From what we saw, the refs have missed around 5 calls till now. One more big miss on a call was Makai Lemon getting injured. The Trojans WR took a ‘cheap shot’ after the punt and was down on the field for a few minutes. Later on, he was taken away in an ambulance. However, this did not reward Michigan with a penalty.
Should’ve been defensive holding on USC. These refs are missing calls on both sides, so at least it’s even.

With one 53-yard TD run from Kalel Mullings, followed by another 41-yard TD run by Donovan Edwards, the Wolverines currently stand at 14-0 against Lincoln Riley and the Trojans. It does look like the team has significantly improved from the version we saw during the AR State game. One of the major changes that happened in this game was Alex Orji taking up the QB role.
Up until now, Moore was using Davis Warren as the starting QB for the team, despite having someone like Orji on the roster. Orji has closely followed JJ McCarthy and has been a part of the Wolverines roster since the golden days of former HC Jim Harbaugh and McCarthy. It was against AR State when Orji showed why he should’ve been the starting QB of the game. Coming in during the 3rd quarter, this guy managed to create amazing pressure by grabbing a 9-play 80-yard drive and a 9-yard pass.
And against the Trojans as well, this dude is rocking it. However, the misses on the penalties are going to hit the Trojans hard. If Moore and his boys get out of this scot free then Trojans are gonna landed in troubled waters.
Will Sherrone Moore stop USC’s run?
Standing on the 2nd rank of the Week 2 Power Rankings, the Trojans and Riley have been running the show. The team, which was marked as the “worst” by Paul Finebaum, started off the season with a win over LSU at 27-20, then followed that with an explosive game against the Utah State at 48-0. Somehow, from the ashes, Riley managed to raise the bar.
While Finebaum did say that he doesn’t see the Trojans “getting any better”, the defense and the offense would like to say otherwise. While the offense has been average, with QB Miller Moss somehow managing to bring back the Caleb Williams era, it is the defense that is the cream of the crop for the Trojans.

With a Field goal in the 2nd quarter by Michael Lantz, the score stands at 14-3. There are massive odds of Michigan winning this. The Wolverines’ defense has been solid at not allowing any run game for the Trojans. However, we just have to wait and watch how this all ends.
And as you wait, why not tune in to the new episode of EssentiallySports Think Tank? This time around, we interview Doug Sanders, so make sure you lock in!!
