Is Michigan's desperation for Bryce Underwood a sign of their crumbling football dynasty?

The Michigan Wolverines recorded a hard-fought win over rivals Michigan State to give some respite to Sherrone Moore. The Wolverines are now 5-3 for the season but their playoff hopes are all but over. However, Moore is quietly making moves in the recruitment game with an eye on building a 2025 dynasty. They have been pushing to flip LSU commit Bryce Underwood and recent developments at the program do indicate they could be successful, but they are not settling at that.

This has been an underwhelming campaign for Moore and his Wolverines. Replacing Jim Harbaugh was never going to be easy,  but that transition has been harder than what many of their fans envisioned. Their problems have ranged from frequent switching of quarterbacks changes to a lot of missed plays. But their interest in Underwood shows they mean business and it could come with another boost.

If Underwood sets foot into the Wolverines camp, it will be a double gain for the regents. Derek Meadows, a 2025 wide receiver, and a fellow LSU hard commit, is highly likely to follow him to Michigan. Meadows, a Bishop Gorman prospect, has been touted as a massive threat in the red zone. He is ranked no. 80 nationwide and 11th in WR rankings.

Michigan’s TJ Ronin revealed details from an interview with Andrew Marsh, who committed to the Wolverines in August. According to Ronin, Marsh said that they are in pursuit of Underwood, Georgia commit Shamari Earls and Derek Meadows.

‘Derek Meadows is the receiver that is apparently attached to Bryce Underwood and he would only come, from my understanding, he, it’s a package deal. It’s one of those where if Underwood comes to Michigan, he wants to come to Michigan. If Underwood does not come to Michigan, the interest is not as high,” TJ Ronin told John D’Adamo on the Michigan at the Voice of College Football podcast.

This would make sense for Meadows. A wide receiver like him would be eager to end up with a five-star QB like Underwood. Underwood is the top overall recruit in the 2025 class and his commitment to LSU remains solid, but Moore’s chances of landing the Belleville High School prospect have been boosted in recent weeks.

On3 reported, “As National Signing Day approaches, multiple sources tell On3 that the Wolverines reconnected with the family in the last three weeks and have offered a competitive NIL package on par with what LSU has presented.” Underwood is reportedly expected to earn approximately $5 million through NIL deals over three to four years in college. As the top recruit in the country, he will also bag one of the highest salaries in the 2025 cycle.

The push to bring Underwood to Ann Arbor could be boosted by Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy’s promise, who said he would be willing to contribute up to $3 million to help the Wolverines acquire a top-10 quarterback last month. Earlier this month, he mentioned that he had talked with Sherrone Moore about making a possible contribution.

Meanwhile, on Monday night four-star quarterback Carter Smith decommitted to Michigan, opening the door for Underwood’s move. Moreover, soon after this news, one of Underwood’s teammates at Belleville High School, Adrian Walker Jr, tweeted a zipped mouth emoji on X. However, the tweet was deleted afterward. Yet it will be enough to get the Wolverines’ fanbase excited for what’s to come.

Given their troubles at the QB position, the addition of a top-quality player in Underwood would be exactly what they need.

Michigan’s quarterback issues put Sherrone Moore into deep water

Moore has been constantly in the firing line for their persisting quarterback issues and their lackluster effort in the transfer portal during the off-season. Although the subject is still debatable whether or not Moore really did enough to push a QB into the portal, the tumultuous situation it led to, costing match after match, is undeniable.

Michigan has tried three quarterbacks under center in this highly underwhelming season: Davis Warren, Jack Tuttle, and Alex Orji. But neither of them can reliably give the team an overall performance.

But judging all the nitty gritty, Moore re-loaded senior Davis Warren at the start against Michigan State. The deliveries and the passing attacks were nothing worth praising, but at least they were decent, with no turnover. But then, it wasn’t even close to the standard mark either.

The result is not commendable, but the efforts are. It was quite clear that Moore needed to make a QB change after Orji failed to make it work, and Moore did it. When Tuttle couldn’t make a difference against Illinois, Moore reflected on the decision and inflicted another change. It was certainly not ideal to go for four quarterback changes in eight weeks, but at least, it’s showing the desperate attempts of a dedicated coach to get better. If Bryce Underwood’s saga ends with him at the Wolverines,  Moore might have what he wants. This in addition to Derek Meadows, could be a game changer for them next season.
