Michael Vick has never been one to mince words, and he certainly wasn’t about to start now. As the former NFL superstar turned Norfolk State Spartans’ head coach sat down for an interview during Super Bowl week, discussing the legacy of John Elway, he found himself abruptly cut off mid-sentence. That didn’t sit well with Vick. The good thing was that this CHAMPSIDE reporter shifted the interview vibe to that of Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward.
The video posted by CHAMPSIDE on YouTube, where Michael Vick checked this “disrespectful” after being abruptly cut in the middle. “You just going to cut me off while I’m talking about John like that. That’s disrespectful man,” he fired back, shaking his head in disbelief. “This John Elway, one of the greatest quarterbacks ever.” His frustration quickly turned into a challenge, flipping the script on the reporter. “Give me a comparison right now of a quarterback that look like John Elway. Give me one, make it good.” Before anyone could answer, Vick provided one himself: Patrick Mahomes. But it was the next part of the conversation that truly stood out, as Vick shifted his focus to two quarterbacks aiming to make their own NFL legacies—Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward.
With the draft just months away, both Shedeur Sanders and Ward find themselves in a crucial stretch. The two friends/competitors, linked by their competitive drive and mutual respect, have been working to prove they belong in the conversation as top-tier prospects. And in Vick’s eyes, they already do. “I’m excited about Cam and Shedeur, you know. You only need two quarterbacks to enter the league every year to keep the train rolling,” he said. “I think those guys are game changers. I think they’re generational talents.” Vick wasn’t just talking about talent, though—he was pointing to something deeper, something intangible.

“The things that they’ve learned over the years, the people they’ve been around, the mentors they have… If you watch them on social media, the way they push each other, they’ll always be competitive forever.” It’s a crucial point. Success in the NFL isn’t just about raw ability—it’s about work ethic, film study, and an obsessive desire to improve. Vick sees that in both Sanders and Ward.
The former Colorado and Miami passers are hoping to be drafted within the top 5 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. Of course, the path to the top of the draft isn’t a straight line for either quarterback. Shedeur, the son of Deion Sanders, carries the added weight of expectation. Ward and Sanders have question marks and aren’t completely clean, elite prospects. But what they do have is momentum, and as Vick alluded to.
That’s why even something as seemingly small as Shedeur shaking the hands of every crew member after an interview—something ESPN’s Kevin Clark noted during Super Bowl media week—matters. It’s a glimpse into the professionalism, maturity, and leadership that NFL teams are looking for. Deion Sanders made a name for himself, not just with his play, but with his ability to command a room. Shedeur seems to be following that same blueprint.

What’s your perspective on:
Is Shedeur Sanders the next big thing in the NFL, or just another overhyped prospect?
Have an interesting take?
With the Super Bowl LIX Creator Flag Football Game set to take place the day before the big game, Shedeur Sanders will be sharing the field with an eclectic mix of talent—social media sensations like IShowSpeed and Kai Cenat, music stars like Quavo, and NFL legends like Cam Newton and, of course, Michael Vick himself. It’s a fun event, sure, but it’s also another opportunity for Sanders to put his name out there in front of a massive audience. Although another face-off with Newton will be particularly interesting after his remarks on him.
Vick’s passion for the game is as evident as ever. When he says Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders have the tools to be special, it carries weight. “As long as Shedeur can watch Cam and see what Cam doing and Cam can watch Shedeur… They’ll both be in the film room, you know, just getting to it and making sure that—man, I meet you at the Pro Bowl, or meet you at the Super Bowl.”

Shedeur Sanders has ‘ice in his veins’, despite the No. 1 hype
Shedeur Sanders could very well be one of the first names called on draft night—maybe even the first. But if you think he’s losing sleep over whether he’ll be the No. 1 overall pick, think again. The Colorado Buffs star quarterback has a different priority in mind: landing in the right situation.
“These are good problems to have,” Sanders said in an ESPN NFL interview. “You could be in a way worse situation, so being No. 1, that don’t really matter to me at the end of the day.” Translation? He’s not getting caught up in the draft-day hype. While the Tennessee Titans currently hold the top pick, Sanders isn’t focused on just going first—he’s looking for the best fit.

“Yeah, I could go No. 1, but it may not be a fit. Or I could go No. 2, and it would be a fit. Or I could go No. 3, and it would be a fit,” Sanders explained. “Any situation you’re going into is not going to be perfect, so the numbers don’t really matter to me.” As the NFL veteran QB very well said, these guys have the intangibles and the mindset.
