Is Cam Ward's exclusion from Heisman talks a slap in the face to his stellar season?

Have you ever witnessed a Heisman candidate being thrown through the mud following just one poor game? That’s exactly what happened when Davis Pollack, a CFB analyst, chose to criticize Hurricanes’ QB Cam Ward. Despite his outstanding stats, Ward was unable to avoid the blame game after the Hurricanes, who had been unbeaten all season, suffered a surprise loss to Georgia Tech. Despite throwing for 348 yards and scoring three touchdowns with no picks, the man was still being scrutinized. This time, however, CFB insiders jump to Cam Ward’s defense.

It’s Ward’s last-minute mistakes that make the news. And someone had to take the fall when the Hurricanes’ winning streak ended. Regretfully, Cam’s Heisman shine suffered greatly. College football insider Brandon Walker’s X post is worth checking out. He sent a message on November 17 that read, “Not having Cam Ward on this list is insanity.” This season’s Heisman contenders, which include Travis Hunter, Dillon Gabriel, Ashton Jeanty, Jalen Milore, and Jaxson Dart, were shown in the post. Hurricanes Cam Ward appears to be the victim of flagrant unfairness.

On top of that, Brandon Walker posted another message on his X account in support of Cam Ward, saying, “Gabriel. But Ward should be above Gabriel, Milroe, and dart.” And it makes sense, considering the Miami quarterback’s record. Ward’s 3,494 yards and 32 touchdowns this season rank third among all Miami athletes in a single season. Such a record is unattainable for other quarterbacks. If you lose one game, it’s all for nothing. However, is the famous quarterback truly to blame for this defeat?

Not at all. Due to the fact that Cam broke the school record formerly held by Steve Walsh with a record-breaking 74-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Arroyo, resulting in his 30th TD of the season. Despite Cam Ward’s impressive performance against Georgia Tech last week, the focus was ultimately on his team’s loss. Georgia Tech defeated the fourth-ranked Hurricanes 28–23, ending their 9–1 winning streak and their first defeat of the season.

But the Miami quarterback’s Heisman probability remains a mystery. Will he be eliminated from this race or will he overcome this setback at this point in the season? Let’s investigate it further.

Cam Ward’s Heisman probability

Following their shocking loss to Georgia Tech, the Hurricanes’ playoff chances plummeted from 97% to 67%, using the Athletic model. Although it was from the spot they were intended for, it was still a good chance. Given how dominant they had appeared for the majority of the season, Miami’s collapse from a top 4 position to N0.12 was harsh. There is no margin for error with two games remaining against Wake Forest and Syracuse. The road ahead appears to be anything but straightforward, even though the ACC title odds keep them in the postseason picture.

Although losing one game shouldn’t be disastrous, Miami’s stakes are much bigger. Cam Ward and their defense, which has been a force for most of the year, need to tighten up. He must continue to play his game like he has throughout the season. Despite his strong showing, he now has odds of +800, down from +200 before the loss, which puts him out of the top 5 amongst the competitors.

However, Ward still has a chance to strengthen his Heisman case, especially if he can help Miami defeat Wake Forest and Syracuse in their upcoming games. His candidacy might be revived with a great finish, particularly if Miami earns a position in the College Football Playoffs. Let’s figure out what went down.
