Is Billy Napier's time with the Gators up? Who should replace him—Rhule or Kiffin?

How many wrong decisions can you make? Billy Napier is right now on a speed run to ruin his career. Imagine this: you get handed a camp with amazing financial backing and a record of solid recruitment which has given rise to 3 different Heisman winners. How do you take that and still manage to somehow ruin your entire 2024 season? Also, keeping in mind the schedule for the Gators, Billy Napier couldn’t have found the worse timing for his shenanigans. Starting the season with 2 back-to-back losses against teams that are not even in the top 10? This ain’t Gators football and it ain’t no wonder why Napier’s job is now on the line.

So, appropriately, ESPN’s College GameDay Podcast on September 17th brought us a list of coaches who could be the perfect replacement for Napier. “Right, Kiffin, James Franklin, Eli Drinkwitz, Matt Campbell, Matt Rhule, Mike Gundy, all right?” ESPN mentioned. These coaches stand on the hypothetical coach wish list. However, out of all the coaches, one name makes the perfect sense Lane Kiffin

The Rebels HC has been phenomenal! Starting week 1 with 2 massive wins over Paladins and Middle Tennessee, Kiffin with his QB Jaxson Dart has proved why he is the real underdog. This year, Kiffin quite literally has the ‘go big or go broke’ roster. Not only that, the 2025 NFL draft could see multiple invites being sent to Kiffin and his roster. Even ESPN agrees with this. “In terms of combine invites, and they’re gonna have double-digit draft picks,” ESPN mentioned in the video.

Now Kiffin as the Gators HC makes sense. Napier’s biggest problem was his decision-making. When he had access to a talented QB like DJ Lagway, Napier still decided to rely on Graham Mertz. This was a dumb move. We saw how, during the Samford game, when Mertz was injured, Lagway shined. His first game for the Gators and he managed to pull in 3 TDs and cross 450 yards. If this can’t convince Napier to change his decision regarding his starting QB, then we don’t know what will.

Even Paul Finebaum mentioned, “Had he gone with Lagway and lost by the same score, I don’t think his situation would be nearly as bad today,” while talking about Gators and Napier’s firing (which can happen anytime). However, Billy Napier ain’t the only coach in danger.

CFB coaches on the hot seat

Every season, college football sees coaches getting fired for multiple reasons. Last year, 5 coaches lost their HC position and this time around we do have a few picks who are walking on thin ice. We already know about Napier, so we will move on from that. The surprise pick this year is Ryan Day from the Buckeyes. Day has used a lot of financial backing from Ohio State to form his top roster. While it is paying off with the Buckeyes standing on top with back-to-back wins, you still gotta keep in mind that Ohio State fans want it all or nothing. If Day fails to make the playoffs or win the national championship, then his HC career is probably done for.

Next would be Dave Aranda. The Bears are having the worst season so far. While Aranda did think that he had done enough to revamp the offense and defense, the team was still suffering. It looks like 2022 would remain as the time Baylor was of any good. Finally, we got Clark Lea. We think every CFB fan would agree that Vanderbilt needs to change its conference. The teams that the Commodores are going to go up against with the current roster will make it tough to last long this season.
