Losing top recruits hurts. But losing them to a rival? That’s a whole new level of disrespect. And for Billy Napier, this is becoming an all-too-familiar nightmare. Keeping Florida relevant in recruiting has been a struggle since day one. And every lost asset makes the battle even tougher. First, Mario Cristobal and the Canes pulled a fast one, snatching a key recruit right from under his nose. Now, Napier is scrambling to stop the bleeding before it turns into a full-blown collapse. But here’s the plot twist — after taking from Napier, Cristobal just got hit with a major setback himself. Call it karma, and karma doesn’t miss.
Yes, Cristobal just lost a key piece of his Miami machine — one of his longtime insiders. He has been a fixture at Miami since 2017, playing a crucial role in recruiting before shifting to a wide receivers analyst position. For years, he helped shape the Canes’ talent pipeline. But now, he’s moving on. On February 18, Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports dropped the news: “Miami analyst David Cooney is expected to be hired as the new wide receivers coach at Bowling Green.” However, it’s a big step up for Cooney. But for Cristobal, it is a tough blow, losing a trusted right-hand man to a non-Power Five program.

However, before landing in Coral Gables, David Cooney was making waves in the high school ranks. As the OC for the Miami Southridge Spartans, he helped lead them to the 2016 8A state title. And he wasn’t just learning from anyone — he was under Billy Rolle, a Miami coaching legend with 3 state titles from three different schools. That’s elite football knowledge at work. And when Cooney joined the Hurricanes, he started as a quality control analyst, zeroing in on WRs. From day one, he was shaping Miami’s passing attack, proving he was more than just a recruiter, he was a football mind built for the next level.
As of now, the move makes perfect sense for Cooney. See, he’s been grinding as a WR analyst since Mario Cristobal took over, and now, he’s leveling up. And for the Bowling Green Falcons, it’s a huge win – as Cooney’s deep ties to South Florida’s prep scene give HC Scot Loeffler a prime recruiter in one of the nation’s hottest talent pools. But what about Miami? Did they take a loss here? Not exactly.
Just when Gators fans thought their offseason chaos was over, Miami struck like a thunderbolt — snatching a key piece right off the Gators’ plate. Enter Will Harris. This isn’t just a coaching swap; it’s a power move. And for Billy Napier, it’s yet a headache he didn’t need.
When Will Harris left Florida to become Miami’s safety coach in Feb, the repercussions quickly spread like a tidal wave to Gainesville. On3’s Josh Newberg invited Miami insider Izubee Charles to his show on February 16, and Charles quickly made the connections. “There are a ton of guys that come to mind, but I kind of want to focus on one big-time prospect that’s been a Hurricanes lean for a long time, and that’s 2026 four-star safety Aiden Pouncey,” stated Charles.
And you know, Pouncey is a Florida kid through and through. On top of that, his brothers, Ethan and Jordan, both wore the Gators’ colors. So, the battle between Cristobal and Napier is heating up once again. And to be honest, this rivalry is just getting started.

Can Mario Cristobal actually acquire a valuable asset?
You see, coaching changes are frequent. But how did this one end? Horrible. Because Will Harris was Florida’s secondary recruiting closer, not just any position coach. On top of that, he was instrumental in helping the Gators rebuild their pass defense and re-establish Florida as a contender for elite DBs in his one season with the team.
Moreover, Will Harris contributes significant experience. He helped create one of the toughest secondaries in the Sun Belt when serving as Georgia Southern’s DBs coach before joining Miami. Furthermore, Harris established himself as a top recruiter at Washington before that, when he coached the Huskies’ DBs. Then, he became a rising star in the coaching profession because of his ability to relate to players and attract elite talent.
And now, in Mario Cristobal’s Miami, he is engaging in the same activity, but this time he is capturing Florida’s own prospects. Let’s face it, Miami is more than simply a player-flipping company. They are making a comeback after missing the 2024 playoffs, and Coral Gables is directly being impacted by the recent leak in Napier’s secondary pipeline.

And the greatest way to describe it was by Miami insider Charles, who said, “I think the Harris move to Miami was kind of that final nail in the coffin for the Gators since the start of the new year.” Now, let’s see if Florida can put an end to Mario Cristobal’s dominance in 2025 or not.
