Did Marcus Freeman's decision put Riley Leonard's career at risk? What was he thinking?

A wounded warrior is being thrust back into the battlefield, and this time, it’s not on foreign soil, but in the relentless arena of college football. Riley Leonard, the heart and soul of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, is being asked to play through the pain, with the team banking on him to face the Purdue Boilermakers this weekend. But here’s the catch—Leonard isn’t just nursing a minor injury. The QB suffered a potentially career-threatening posterior labrum injury on his non-throwing shoulder during last week’s devastating loss to Northern Illinois on September 8th. And yet, despite the risks, the Fighting Irish are pushing him back into action, keeping their playoff dreams alive while seemingly jeopardizing their star quarterback’s future.

Notre Dame’s season has seen mixed results so far, with one win and one painful loss. Leonard, however, has been their driving force, racking up 321 passing yards and two interceptions across both games. He’s their crucial asset—the glue that holds the team together. But instead of resting and recovering, he’s being pushed to fight through the pain, a decision that has sent shockwaves through the fanbase.

Fans are in an uproar, accusing the coaching staff and management of being reckless with Leonard’s health. The prospect of risking their quarterback’s future for the sake of a single game has ignited a firestorm of controversy. What should be the priority: a shot at the playoffs or the long-term well-being of a young athlete who has given everything to the team?

One user on X called out Marcus Freeman for allowing such a situation and said, “Marcus Freeman should be ashamed of himself”. In case anything major happens to the QB in the next game, touchwood, the HC will face a heavy inferno from the fire for jeopardizing the youngster’s career. Moreover, an abundance of fans is coming after Notre Dame for Riley’s injury, including a few orthopedic surgeons who elaborately explained the drastic seriousness of his injury.

The fans react brutally to shame the Notre Dame management

After the loss to Northern Illinois, this is what Freeman had to say to address the injury. He said, “We have a lot of belief in Riley and him running our offense.” The HC doesn’t seem to care enough about the injury, which is why the fans in the comments are calling him out with their full force.

Did Marcus Freeman's decision put Riley Leonard's career at risk? What was he thinking?

Have an interesting take?

A user yelled out a request to Notre Dame to give Leonard some well-deserved rest. The comment read, “SIT HIM DOWN LET HIM REST!!!”

Next, this fan wrote out a lengthy statement to question the sanity behind such a decision and wrote, “Player was INJURED IN GAME?? Coaches and team doctors don’t check him out fully?? TEAM IS STILL STARTING THE INJURED PLAYER IN THE NEXT GAME? Doesn’t makes sense so it’s a lie or the truth isn’t being told 100% ☘️ #NotreDame”

An actual orthopedic surgeon also took to the comments and chimed in with his own opinion on how serious a posterior labia injury is. He said, “As an orthopedic surgeon of 40 years, I would never recommend someone with a posterior labia injury to play under ANY circumstance. It is too risky and taking a few weeks off can extend longevity by years. I’ve seen it in my patients.”

Lastly, this Notre Dame fan raised the question of whether other QBs can step in and fill Leonard’s shoes. His comment read, “Are we really starting a hurt QB with accuracy problems? Are the others QB’s on the roster dead?”

Thus, it is becoming more and more apparent that the fans are not pleased with Notre Dame’s carelessness regarding Leonard’s injury and while they still have time to implement changes in their roster, it would be pretty surprising to see the QB on the bench since the team needs him so desperately.
