The NIL era has taken over the college football programs’ future roster stability and overall growth. The strategy is simple. Raise money and buy players, fostering a roster unmatched by none. Where do the North Carolina Tar Heels stand in the evolved environment after they have embraced the former New England Patriot legend as their head coach in a historic move? Well, there has been a mixed air of jubilation and astonishment ever since the coach stepped into Chapel Hills and took the pledge to make it a championship-worthy team.
He wants the team to shine brightly on the podium, holding a Natty in their hand. Sounds tough? Well, it is, but at the same time, it might be a possibility. With Mike Lombardi by his side, the veteran NFL head coach emphasized the importance of building a strong locker room culture fueled by mutual understanding and respect for each other. During the spring practice, the coach just wants to focus on studying each and every player on the field, both physically and psychologically, to bring out the best in them. That being said, he will also have to manage roster concerns with the upcoming spring transfer portal. However, despite Bill Belichick’s efforts, it all may come down to recruitment.
Specifically, UNC’s recruitment. See, the program is known for basketball. And why wouldn’t it be? Michael Jordan played college basketball at UNC. James Worthy did, too. Vince Carter. Tyler Hansbrough. The list is long. However, the same list isn’t that long when it comes to the football program. So who could be a better person than former UNC football coach Mack Brown to comment on it?

He appeared on the March 20 episode of the ‘Never Settle’ podcast. Naturally, Belichick was mentioned and so the host asked, “If Bill Belichick called you right now, and said, ‘What am I facing?’ What would you tell him?” Brown broke it down in two points and said, “No. 1: North Carolina is not a brand school in football, and that’s tough with the NIL era, and you don’t wanna hurt basketball.”
“You can be great in football and basketball, but football got to be really important. So, I think if you’re going to coach modern-day and you’re gonna have a chance to be really good and win a national championship, which is what everybody wanted, then you need to be at a program where the president and the athletic director are forward-thinking enough that they are giving enough money to do it. It’s not about fits and relationships anymore. It’s transactional,” said the head coach, who had to vacate his chair in the advent of Belichick in Chapel Hill.

Brown’s final season with the Tar Heels came to an end in a strange way. After a 70-50 loss to James Madison, Brown said in the locker room that he would resign if players deemed him responsible. But he didn’t have to do that hustle himself. Bill Belichick’s hiring did the rest. However, the current coach needs to keep his eyes on other issues as well.

Bill Belichick needs another Tom Brady for his UNC stint!
Over at ESPN’s Always College Football podcast earlier this week, former New York Jets quarterback Greg McElroy put the Tar Heels on the pedestal, dubbing them one of the biggest off-season storylines. Capping off the season 6-7 [overall and] 3-5 in the ACC, it was not a surprise to feel zero attention on the off-season activity. But Bill Belichick’s arrival has changed the course for good.

“North Carolina Tar Heels…maybe one of the biggest stories of the entire off-season. When you go out and you finish the season 6-7 [overall and] 3-5 in the ACC, not a lot of people are going to pay attention to what you do this off-season…but North Carolina said, ‘Enough of that. We want to be the center of attention. We’re gonna go out and we’re gonna hire a six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach to take over the program’. Bill Belichick…is by far one of the biggest coaching hires in college football in recent memory…it is crazy to think about. But either way, it’s gonna be a lot of fun to watch. The big key is the quarterback spot,” McElroy opined.
McElroy dug out the headspace behind a $50 million investment of the Tar Heels higher-ups. Belichick had an impressive NFL record. Six Super Bowl titles as the HC, an outstanding 24-season run with a record 303 season wins, and 31 playoff wins aren’t a joke after all. But don’t just forget Belichick had Tom Brady by his side throughout.
“Tom Brady is probably the greatest quarterback in the history of the game if you think. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick…worked in tandem and to six Super Bowl championships. Okay, well, there is not [a] Brady to go with here on North Carolina’s roster. We know that this is a group that does have some talent and some experience. Max Johnson [is] probably the best example of that. He’s been playing football for quite a while. He did suffer a bad leg injury in the opener, so probably not going to be at 100% at any point until fall camp. So, that’s when we’ll get a good assessment of what he’s going to be,” McElroy noted.

Can Max Johnson be that ace in the hole for Belichick at UNC? Well, his numbers will support the idea, but health will not. He is undergoing an injury healing and is not supposed to return until fall camp. But Belichick added a lot of names, including Bryce Baker, the backup QB, to his roster, and hopefully, they all will add to his championship aspirations down the stretch. What do you think?
