Is Arch Manning the future of the Longhorns, or is Quinn Ewers still the top dog?

Quinn Ewers’ injury left him in the back seat! Two days ago, the Longhorns QB took the lead in the 2024 Heisman Trophy race after a stellar performance against Michigan. In their last game, Ewers recorded 246 yards, three TDs, and 0 interceptions. This propelled his Heisman odds to +1200.

In his Week 3 game against UTSA, the Texas Longhorns QB entered as the favorite to win. But no one saw the injury that was coming to stain Quinn Ewers’ race to glory.

Potential Heisman Trophy winner Quinn Ewers stunned the Texas fans when he slowly walked into the tent on the sidelines during the game against UTSA on Saturday. There wasn’t any instance that he was injured by a hit or tackle but the problem stemmed from an injury on his throwing hand that made him display signs of discomfort. As per Steve Sarkisian, Ewers has a “strained abdomen.”

While we don’t know when he’ll be back, Quinn Ewers’ backup never gave the fans the time to sulk over his absence. Arch Manning immediately replaced him and assured that the Longhorns were in good hands after throwing a 19-yard TD pass on the next snap in the second quarter. Not only that, his running skills shone as he secured another 67-running yard house call. This not only shows how reliable the 19-year-old is but it also puts Quinn Ewers in the shadow of the Heisman Trophy if he were to miss some games in the season.

Steve Sarkisian had previously stated that Quinn Ewers is the unquestioned starter but he’s also giving Arch Manning a chance to get snaps. But after Manning’s spectacular plays, Ewers might not be the only Longhorns QB we can count on. The athleticism that the redshirt freshman is displaying could lead Steve Sarkisian to turn Texas into a two QB system.

Have an interesting take?

This isn’t the only game Arch Manning played this season. The 5-star recruit also found the opportunity to lead his team in the second half of their season opener on August 31. He contributed to the blowout 52-0 win against Colorado State with two touchdowns. Manning isn’t only an accurate passer but he also has the speed that makes him an excellent runner. Even with Ewers out of the game, the Longhorns can remain hopeful with Arch Manning in Texas.
