Well, the fault must be in Michigan Wolverines HC Sherrone Moore’s stars. After all, no matter how much he tries to clean up the mess left by Jim Harbaugh, one or the other struggle comes up. Yes, the Wolverines got some momentary happiness. After all, they got lucky with landing the No.1 recruit Bryce Underwood. With this, came up a boost of confidence.
Moore went that extra mile to go looking for Underwood’s backup. The Wolverines already have their eyes on a young talent. That’s none other than Ryder Lyons. Sadly, even in this Moore will have to face some tough competition. It’s the Big 10 HC who might snatch away Lyons before committing to Ann Arbor.
The battle for Ryder Lyons intensifies

Well, we all are aware of how Moore had put his blood, sweat, and tears into landing Underwood. He has been the talk of the town since the former Belleville star flipped his commitment from LSU in late November. With his commitment, the 6-foot-4, 17-year-old phenom brought with him his arm strength and football IQ to Ann Arbor. Even though he was not eligible for the Bowl game, he was seen practicing with starter Davis Warren and freshman Jadyn Davis. And he definitely did not disappoint. That’s when Moore thought of going extra-protective about the young chap. As Michigan insider EJ Holland noted, “They are going to shoot their shot, especially with the first guy on our list and that’s Ryder Lyons a five-star quarterback out of California now.” Before Moore gets too excited, here comes a reality check.
On the On3 Recruits podcast, host Josh Newberg dropped a bomb, “We have an uncommitted another one Ryder Lyons from Bolson California. 6’2″ 205 now he’s uncommitted but I think probably USC’s early favorite.” In that case, Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans will be very much in the race. Even though Lyons will not be an immediate joiner, the desperation to land him is real. As Newberg stated, “Ryder Lyons is kind of interesting because he’s expected to take a one-year mission after high school…if he takes a year off essentially makes him a 2027 recruit.”

No matter when the backup joins, Moore must be extra careful. After all, it’s going to be him vs. the quarterback whisperer, Riley. Do you know that Lyons already received an offer from USC earlier?
Sherrone Moore can find a silver lining
Back in December 2023, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound sophomore quarterback lifted his Folsom Bulldogs to a state championship berth. Lyons came with a 28-25 CIF Northern California Division 1-A championship home win over Pittsburg. That’s when he came under the Trojans’ radar. On December 2, 2023, he tweeted “After a great game and an amazing conversation with the head coach of USC I’m blessed to say I have received an offer from the University of Southern California.” But there is another reason behind USC’s interest in Lyons.

He is the younger brother of USC tight end Walker Lyons. So you can guess that Moore might already be feeling that Lyons is slipping his grip. In that case, there is some news that might motivate him to not lose his focus on his goal. We can now say that Riley as quarterback whisperer tales are fading away. It got more pronounced after his Miller Moss experiment failed.
Even though he served as Caleb Williams’ backup for two years, this season has been a disaster for the QB. One example is the Trojans’ face-off against the Washington Huskies. The QB threw for two touchdowns while at the same time was intercepted on three occasions. In this case, Lincoln Riley is to be blamed. After all, he could have been extra careful about the QB. So in a way, Sherrone Moore still has some chance with Ryder Lyons.
