Is it time for Lee Corso to hang up his hat after that Alabama fiasco?

Everyone is excited to watch the Alabama vs Georgia game on College GameDay. The 4th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide are set to take on the second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs. The fans are already pretty pumped, but then as per tradition, ESPN’s Lee Corso showed how to take things up a notch. Corso, the show’s long-time analyst, got everyone’s attention as he was about to pick among Alabama and Georgia. As the tradition goes, Corso gets handed the helmets of both the teams, one by one. The one he doesn’t want to pick, he spikes their helmet into the ground.

This time, the helmet spike went towards Georgia as Corso confirmed his choice of the Crimson Tide for the match-up. While the home crowd rejoiced and erupted in joy, we know there are two sides to this thing. And then there are neutrals. Some people believed that the stunt Corso was performing was taking it to the edge, especially in front of such a large crowd of Alabamians.

The world of social media was abuzz after seeing Corso’s act. Everyone waits for College Gameday to see how their teams are going to be covered. However, the act got mixed reactions from the fans. There were some who jeered; at the same time, some fans were full of praise for the old man. One of the fans tweeted this: “Time to hang it up, old man.”

Alabama vs. Georgia: stakes skyrocket as fans react to Lee Corso’s stunt

It was not only about the helmet toss, of course. Some fans were disappointed because they thought Corso had lost some of his edge before. Slogans such as “He doesn’t even know where he’s at,” and “Boys wouldn’t even let his old ass retire,” began to pop up after the event. Another added, “Corso cool and all, but it’s been a good run. He needs to step down.”

The fans, especially the loyalists of the Alabama football team, their socks rolled up to their knees–were not pleased that the legend of the Crimson Tide was down for a drama performance.

Have an interesting take?

While some fans were angry, there was certainly no shortage of support for Corso. Some still tune in for his helmet picks, and many still enjoy the energy he brings to the show. And, while his decision to support Georgia in this game may have angered some viewers, he probably did so just this once. Corso also pointed out that, Jalen Milroe’s capabilities as a runner would be instrumental in what Corso believed the Tide would overshadow. He said of the young QB, “Milroe’s going to be the difference-maker,” to pass the ball and avoid the pass of the ball. In the last three games, Georgia’s defense had not given up a touchdown, but Corso expects this performance to end with Milroe.

The stage couldn’t be bigger for this Alabama-Georgia clash. The Crimson Tide are underdogs at home for the first time since 2007. It is a fresh start for the Crimson Tide football with a new head coach, DeBoer in the season after Saban retired. On the other hand, the head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs team, Kirby Smart who has served as the defensive coordinator of Alabama is ready to ensure that his team continues dominating. Smart looked no less prepared to face Alabama when the Tide were led by a different HC. “No, I don’t expect it to be strange,” he said.

Alabama: 3-0, which beat Western Kentucky, South Florida, and Wisconsin, is up against Georgia, which is also 3-0. The Bulldogs are paradigmatic of this, even though they performed emphatically in their 34-3 annihilation of Clemson. But this is an entirely new sort of task for both teams. For Alabama, it’s the opportunity to show that it is possible to remain strong even without Nick Saban. For Georgia, it is about establishing themselves as the kings of the SEC.

While Alabama relies on Jalen Milroe, with 8 TDs, who has been a show, both on passing and rushing, Georgia counts on QB Carson Beck, with 7 touchdowns. The Bulldogs haven’t given up more than 12 points in a game so far. Their ability to control the line of scrimmage could be the deciding factor. Both teams have their eyes on the SEC title, and this game might just be a preview of what’s to come later in the season.
