The Gainesville Swamp has remained a house of horror for the Gators this season. Things aren’t looking great for head coach Billy Napier, who saw his boys lose to Texas A&M 20-33 on Saturday. With a 1-2 record, one can only imagine the kind of pressure Napier must be feeling. The game against the Aggies is a perfect example of how the Gators have declined and the growing concerns about whether Napier is the correct man for the job.
This defeat comes at a time when there are already rumors about Napier’s future at the Gators. As per reports, Ole Miss head coach and offensive mastermind, Lane Kiffin, is said to be interested in the Florida job. Some stories went around that Kiffin would “walk to Florida” if he had the opportunity to do so. According to reports, the University of Florida Board of Trustees has called for an emergency meeting on Sunday morning. This has only fuelled rumors that Napier’s position in the team is precarious. However, if the Gators do not step up to meet expectations, then Napier will be out the door before one can say the word “coaching change. “

Napier’s leadership has never had smooth sailing from the start. With a 12-16 record coupled with 12 losses in his last 15 games against the power conference teams, his coaching stint at Florida has all the potential to turn out to be one of the shortest in the history of the university. If the Gators ever want to let him go, the buyout could make it a costly decision. Per reports, the Gators will have to pay $26 million to Napier if they were to fire him.
Gators stumble against Texas A&M.
At their Week 3 game, the Gators’ fans expressed their frustration with Napier by booing him during a taped public service announcement and his exit towards the locker. The fans that filled the swamp had a lot of expectations for the team, but they ended up leaving the stadium early, and the Texas A&M team extended their lead. The final 20-33 score doesn’t tell the full picture of the game.

The home side was down 0-20 at the end of the first half. Even a lightning delay in the first quarter couldn’t help change Florida’s fortunes. It was a scene of death by a thousand cuts as a visibly frustrated Napier seemed helpless against Mike Elko’s boys. Napier’s acknowledgement of the criticism reflects the harsh reality he faces: “When you play ugly ball, and it doesn’t quite look like we all want it to, then, hey, it comes with the territory.”
