“Way to keep us on the edge of our seats, Committee.” That’s Lane Kiffin said sarcastically, showing his dissatisfaction with the playoffs selection committee. This statement created a big hubbub in the CFB world. And to be honest, it’s even more painful when those teams completely fail. Kiffin is all about challenging the system, but analysts don’t seem to agree with him. So, is Kiffin justified in feeling angry, or is he simply exaggerating things? The debate is intensifying, and it’s difficult to determine who is truly correct in this situation.
Lane Kiffin recently sparked a debate about the College Football Playoff system after seeing blowout victories from teams like Notre Dame, Penn State, and Ohio State. Kiffin questioned the selection process, criticizing the committee’s use of factors like strength of schedule and margin of victory to choose teams. Kiffin believes the system may not be selecting the best teams, and many, including Kiffin, feel college football needs changes, like fixing scheduling issues and reviewing the transfer portal’s timing.
Kiffin isn’t alone in calling for change. Other experts like Danny Kanell have weighed in, showing support for Kiffin’s view, saying, “The 1st round of the playoffs weeded out the frauds as intended.” The debate also extends to players’ rights, with some suggesting that we should treat athletes as employees to address NIL and financial issues. Moreover, an X poll asking who should be the next NCAA commissioner (Grey Saney, Mack Brown, Nick Saban, Oliver Luck, and Lane Kiffin) shows Lane Kiffin voting for Nick Saban. “Some great stuff here. I vote Coach Saban.”

See, let’s just be honest: we can’t totally blame Lane Kiffin for his critical opinion. Teams like SMU and Indiana made it to the final cut and miserably failed to match the expectations. Just imagine playing a qualifying game and trailing by four touchdowns; that’s exactly what happened with the Mustangs against Penn State.
Even Tennessee lost against Ohio State, finding it hard to score points against them. All this together adds up and becomes a breaking point for Lane Kiffin.

Lane Kiffin’s firm stance over CFB’s bias
Is it wrong to get a little frustrated when teams with the same record but an easier schedule make it to the playoffs? Sure, it might be okay if those teams didn’t totally flop, but when they underperform, it feels like a big mistake. Rebels coach Lane Kiffin’s been vocal about his issues with the playoff committee’s picks and making his stance clear from day one. Yet analysts like Joel Klatt aren’t exactly on board with Kiffin’s push for change. So, why the disconnect? Seems like there’s a serious debate brewing.
While Lane Kiffin is out there making his stance clear, Joel Klatt shut him down with his harsh remarks, saying, “If your team played half as well as you tweet, you’d likely be in.” Well, it’s true that Ole Miss failed to meet the expectations of fans and critics after they lost against the Kentucky Wildcats. That’s weird, but then you can also not ignore the fact that this is the same team that won against the back-to-back title-winning team, the Georgia Bulldogs.

And if we talk about an easy schedule, then Indiana should be at the top of the list, not a single ranked opponent, and when they went against Ohio State, we all know how that ended. Moreover, Lane Kiffin also reveals his opinion on the change he is observing in the CFB committee’s decisions this season, saying, “It’s just a different world. You might as well be talking about different leagues. Here’s the NFL, here’s the SEC, here’s a few Big Ten teams, and then there’s everybody else.” See, for now, there is no possibility of change, and we are already on the verge of getting this year’s champions, so the only thing Lane Kiffin and the Rebels could focus on for now is their Gators Bowl against Duke.
