Home/College Football

It’s always about Notre Dame vs USC or Bama vs Auburn, and even UM vs OSU. However, no one ever mentions the “Egg Bowl”. This has to be one of the biggest rivalries out there. We often wonder why people don’t highlight it enough. Ole Miss and Mississippi State have been fighting over the Golden Egg since 1927, and the history behind the name is quite funny. Tom Patterson suggested the name back in 1979 and it was solely done because both the Rebels and the Bulldogs were going into the showdown, looking quite unimpressive with their 7-loss run. Since then, this entire rivalry has turned into one of the most heated in CFB history and Lane Kiffin just got a taste of it.

Back on the exclusive Behind The Mask podcast, Takeo Spikes breaks down what makes this rivalry game so heated. “It’s one of the biggest rivalries in college football, but people don’t understand that though, they don’t understand. I’m here to tell you and I wasn’t, I’m not even a part of it, but I understand it,” Spikes points out.

Yes, we have all seen the Iron Bowl or even the entire brawl that happened when a Michigan player tried to plant the UM flag on the Buckeyes’ home turf during the Wolverines and OSU rivalry game, but do y’all remember the 2018 Thanksgiving brawl?

Infamously called “The Egg Brawl”. Whoever is thinking of these names is a genius. That aside. The entire fight happened because after AJ Brown managed to secure a touchdown for Ole Miss, the Bulldogs player, for some wild reason, continued to fight with Brown for the football.

This quickly caused things to escalate as players from both sides got involved in a tussle. Do you know what this resulted in? Every single player from Ole Miss and Bulldogs for unsportsmanlike conduct flags. The entire scene was extremely dangerous.

Former Ole Miss player Tutan Reyes also points out, “Remember that year, Thanksgiving, where they had the fight that was on ESPN, and yeah, I was there that year.” It was a major deal, and it’s kind of wild that things like these continue to happen in this era of college football.

Luckily, Kiffin survived without any such casualty. Ole Miss took the Golden Egg home with a 26-14 win over the Bulldogs. The Egg is going to stay at Oxford for one more year. But hey, coming back to the brawl thing, it looks like some teams are taking things into their own hands to fix this mess.

Are Buckeyes taking a step in the right direction?

Okay, so this thing has been very controversial. Some are all in for the idea, others aren’t. See, Ryan Day losing to Michigan for the 4th consecutive time hurts, but what hurts more is the fact that this was a Michigan team that didn’t have Jim Harbaugh or any good QB depth.

Now add insult to injury with the entire flag-planting scene, and you get what State Rep. Josh Williams calls the O.H.I.O. Sportsmanship Act. In short, the act specifies that if anyone tries to plant a flag on the Buckeyes home turf, it will be immediately treated as a felony.

The convicted could be charged with a 5-year probation period along with 6-12 months of jail time and a fine that could hit upwards of $2500. Now Andy Staples had called out this move as, “The softest thing anyone has ever done.” And many other CFB fans agree with this take.

However, do you think a team should have the guts to plant their flag on the turf of an opposing team? This could easily result in brawls and fights and can cause damage and even create a career-threatening situation for a player. Yes, kids will be kids, but no one likes violence, right?
