Can Kirby Smart maintain his legacy at UGA, or is he heading towards an Urban Meyer 2.0?

The entire “crime culture” debate regarding the Bulldogs has turned into a cesspool of drama that many people are skipping. Why? Because Kirby Smart has taken the program to a level that they had never reached before. But is UGA’s enabling of Kirby Smart and the ongoing athlete arrest revolving around the Dawgs turning Smart’s reign into an Urban Meyer 2.0 era? It’s kind of surprising because, despite all the problems, some top-notch players are still committing to the Dawgs.

Elijah Griffin took to his official X account to announce that he has decided to commit to the Bulldogs. “Go Dawgs baby!!!🐶 100% committed,” Griffin wrote in the caption of his post. Keeping the “crime culture” topic out of the board for now, Griffin marks a solid addition to Smart’s already strong roster. With Griffin on board, the entire D-line will have another anchor which is going to boost Georgia’s already high-ranking defense.

“Honestly just seeing the whole D-line in action and how I felt I could relate to everybody in that D-line room and how I felt like I’m capable of fitting in that system,” Griffin noted while talking about what made him decide to commit to Smart’s empire. A 5-star recruit marked as one of the top defensive linemen in the class of 2025, Griffin’s commitment proves that despite all the problems the camp is facing, Smart’s reputation is still saving the day.

However, the main question is when will the problems finally end? The first crack in the empire happened when Rara Thomas was arrested and then eventually suspended from the roster. This was a big move on Smart’s end, and it earned him a lot of respect from the CFB world.

However, people were quick to turn against Nick Saban‘s next heir when the entire WR Colbie Young incident happened. Young was charged and arrested for battery and assault. While he was released on a $3,800 bond, the entire incident managed to open up old wounds and popped a question; When is Smart going to take charge?

Kirby Smart and Co.’s lack of accountability

The entire Young and Thomas incident for Smart was just another day at the office. This right here is the problem. As Champ Bailey, former Dawgs legend had pointed out, “It’s unfortunate. There has to be some accountability.” But that is yet to come. See, back when Urban Meyer was the ruling king at the Gators, Gainsville had turned into ‘Gangsville.’

And some fans fear the same would happen to the Dawgs. This is arguably one of the greatest teams in CFB right now. And to watch these types of problems bring the reputation of the program down is disheartening. UGA and Smart are yet to take any concrete steps to curb the rising problems on the campus. While on the turf the team is going great, behind the scenes, things have turned way too ugly.
