Is Carson Beck the hero Georgia needs, or just a temporary fix for their deeper issues?

The Georgia Bulldogs had lowered their SEC position with weeks of lackluster performance after a promising start to the season. They received a further blow from the Rebels in week 12 with a humiliating 18-10 loss. Needless to say, it was none but Carson Beck who came under the siege with every setback the team has undergone so far. The internet was flooded with fans dishing rave reviews over the 21-year-old’s embarrassing on-field prowess, and you can’t blame them at all. But the Bulldogs made a staggering comeback against the Volts last week, and yes, if you have watched it, you know what made the game stand out from all the other Georgia wins this season. Yes, Carson Beck returned the favor to the haters. The QB earned his much-awaited smile, delivering a heroic performance against one of the most prolific defenses. So, could Georgia be finally free from their persistent Carson Beck woes? Well, that calls for a debate.

Not many days have gone by since Beck has eaten up three straight interceptions in the early half of the game, making the team’s fall inevitable. He touched a soul-shattering record of accounting for 14 turnovers in six games. But Saturday (November 12) brought a pleasant shift to the reality. Beck did not leave a stone unturned, breaking tackles and adjusting his pads for perhaps the most crucial 14 yards of his career. The team delivered a satisfying 31-17, and Beck turned an overnight hero from the long-standing clown. But does the shift look sustainable in the long run? CFB analyst Breneman noted, ”We saw today when Carson Beck has some help in his offensive line, protects, and he has time to throw the football, and he has some receivers and Oscar Delp at tight end that can make some plays down the field, Carson Beck is an elite quarterback.”

Breneman marred the feel-good moment for Georgia and Carson Beck by pointing out the harsh truth, ”Carson Beck doesn’t have the athleticism, or the playmaking ability to make up for things when all the pieces are not there. When everything is there, Carson Beck is as good as they come, standing at the pocket, going through the progressions, and taking shots down the field.”

The football intellectuals already put their verdict in place. Carson Beck isn’t the central issue of a lopsided Georgia performance in the season. The 2018 Mr. Florida Football can only be the scapegoat of a fallen team binding at its worst and nothing more than that. Joel Klatt chimed in the debate, discussing the recent dominant win of the Bulldogs. He said Beck was fine all along, When his team decided to play to his level, he delivered.

But the netizens couldn’t understand the simple math. They did dirty to Beck, of course, but not for nothing. But the QB was even questioned for carrying a smile on the sidelines after facing a major turf in the unfortunate Ole Miss game. The season came full circle for the Dawgs QB when he posted the same wide smile this week while addressing the personal comeback in a post-game media call. This one hit different! This is how fast the reality shifts. The only thing that has been constant in Beck’s favor is Smart’s unwavering support through thick and thin.

Kirby Smart has always been on Carson Beck’s side

Kirby Smart took a lot of fire regarding his starting QB choice for the season. After the whimpering loss against the Rebels, the controversy took a surge. Smart has been rigorously asked what he thought about reshuffling the starting quarterback position. The veteran didn’t even take a moment to fend off the call right away.

”We’ve got the quarterback we’ve got who’s completely competent and capable and understanding of our system. He gives us the best chance to win,” said Smart, asking whether he would bench Beck or not. You might have found it ridiculous back at that time, but now it makes sense, right? This is where a class coach excels.

Smart knows exactly where the team was lacking and clearly worked on those areas to perform their first-ever complete play (nailing both the offensive and defensive side) against the Volts.

Now the question begs: did it place them back in the playoff bubble? Well, it certainly did. However, consistency through the remaining two games will take them to December on a firm footing.
