Y’all ever seen a team go from sugar to salt in one given night? That’s exactly what happened when Georgia Bulldogs got smacked by Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Nobody saw that L coming—not with Kirby Smart at the wheel. But here we are. One ugly loss later, Kirby didn’t waste any time. He jumped into the transfer portal like he knew exactly what he wanted. 2 names popped off the screen—Zachariah and Zion Branch. The USC bros are ready to flip the script for the Bulldogs. But before that, Georgia’s got some major gaps to fill, and that portal ain’t magic.
Look, the Branch bros are big-time—Zachariah’s a 5-star wide-out with the type of speed that makes DBs reconsider their commitment choices, and Zion’s a 4-star safety who can clean up messes on the backend. But Georgia’s roster? It’s looking less-than-perfect. Josh Newberg from On3 Recruits went live Sunday with Rusty Mansell from DawgsHQ, and Mansell didn’t hold back. “Anthony Evans just officially announced he’s going into the portal as a wide receiver,” Mansell spilled.
He added, “You look at Georgia, and you start thinking about how badly they’re going to need a slot receiver. This is why they’ve recruited Zachariah Branch and his brother—to be instant playmakers.” The Bulldogs desperately need big-time wide-outs and DBs. Their receiving corps low-key has been a problem for Kirby Smart, not for SEC Ops. The irony. This season they had some serious dropping problems.

Mansell wasn’t done. He kept it real about Georgia’s wide-out situation, saying, “Georgia needs an ex-receiver really, really badly.” Noah Thomas, the 6’6” receiver out of Texas A&M, visited Athens last weekend. “Georgia got the first crack at him,” Mansell said. That’s huge, considering James Coley, now at Georgia, coached Thomas back in his freshman days. But 1 player ain’t gonna solve everything.
See, losing Anthony Evans hurt more than people realize. Georgia’s young wide-outs are promising, but you can’t just throw freshmen into the fire against Texas, Alabama, and Ole Miss and say, catch a 51-yard bomber, without some battle-tested vets. That schedule’s a whole problem next year, and Kirby knows it.
Mansell added, “They’ve also got to have a mixture of guys that can play right now. Georgia’s schedule doesn’t let up an ounce next year. Just because you’ve got Texas, Alabama, and Ole Miss at home doesn’t make it that much easier. So, they’ve got to have guys that can play right now at Georgia.”
Kirby Smart & Georgia Bulldogs’ issue #2
Look, Georgia secondaries somehow turned into a joke lately. The Dawgs need some fresh pieces in secondaries before heading into next season. See, Zion Branch isn’t a luxury pickup; he’s a necessity. If we are being real, safety is another ugly red flag for Georgia. Losing Malaki Starks and Dan Jackson? That’s a whole mess in Athens. Mansell from DawgsHQ explained, “They’ve got KJ Bolden, and that’s a huge win, but they’ve got to have others. They’ve got to have DBs that can play immediately.”

Another guy Mansell mentioned is Adrian Maddox, a safety from UAB who played high school in Georgia. His name is being tossed around as a potential portal target too. Mansell broke down his journey: “Maddox went from Temple to UAB, and now he could end up at Georgia. I think that’s where he’s ultimately going to land.”
We also got one more name in the mix. Jaden Harris, a Miami DB with Atlanta roots. Mansell connected the dots: “Harris played for former Georgia great Robert Edwards at Riverwood High. He’s a kid who kind of took off late, and now he’s in the portal. That’s another name I’d watch.”
Look, the urgency is real. Georgia’s dominance has always been about depth—waves of talent that just keep coming. But right now? The Bulldogs are looking thin in key spots. Kirby’s doing his thing in the portal, but it feels like a race against time. Noah Thomas could be a game-changer, and now they locked in the Branch bros. The offense might just cook. But the defense? That’s still a work in progress.

Anyway, Georgia fans buckle up. Kirby Smart’s got his hands full this offseason. The Branch brothers bring star power, but the Dawgs need more than that to stay on top. Wide-outs and safeties are top priorities, and the transfer portal is the new Bowl game for those who are out of the playoffs. One thing’s for sure—this ain’t the same Georgia team we’ve seen dominating the SEC. Whether that’s a good thing or bad? We’re about to find out.
