Deion Sanders outsmarting Kirby Smart—Is Coach Prime the new king of college football recruitment?

If this was the 2023 season and we told you that Deion Sanders has managed to take away a potential QB commit from Kirby Smart, then you would laugh. But here we are, and Julian Lewis is going to the Buffs. See, Kirby Smart is having quite the year. The Dawgs have arguably one of the toughest schedules this year, and the 8-2 ain’t helping the team out in terms of CFP rankings. While you can say the Vols win was a big deal as we finally saw Carson Beck make some good plays, it just wasn’t enough to get Kirby Smart on the Top 5 spot. And it feels like it is finally time Kirby Smart realizes that if the game ain’t working out, he has to focus on the recruitment side.

Back on X, ESPN College Football shared a post with the caption; “Five-star QB and the No. 2 recruit in the 2025 ESPN 300, Julian Lewis, committed to Colorado on @PatMcAfeeShow.” This is massive news for Coach Prime and Co. and a big win for the Buffs 2025 roster. However, as we pointed out before, this makes things quite hard for Kirby Smart. See, Julian Lewis‘ flip from USC was inevitable. The Trojans are having a horrendous year. Lincoln Riley and Co. are on a 5-5 run and even securing Bowl eligibility feels far off.

While USC did invest around $200 million in a new facility for their 2025 and 2026 recruits, we all knew that it wouldn’t be enough to keep Juju onboard. But here is the thing. See, back on November 17th, Lewis had made a blunder on Instagram. He shared a story and tagged the University of Colorado Boulder. Later on, he switched it up and tagged UGA.

This, naturally, pointed towards Smart and his move at securing the 5-star QB. However, in another post shared by Hayes Fawcett regarding Lewis’ decommittment from USC, 4-star Buffs commit Quanell Farrakhan left a cryptic comment, which made us realize that Juju might have a specific inclination towards a team he is very familiar with. And well, after today, the rest is history.

Coming back to Smart, though, this is a tricky matter for the Dawgs. In the last few months, the Bulldogs have lost multiple commitments. Was it because of the culture or the current performance of the team? We don’t know. What we do know is that this entire switch is going to push Smart to the edge and make him focus on bringing back an important QB decommit.

Kirby Smart, aiming for Nashville Wonderboy

What’s your perspective on:

Have an interesting take?

The curious case of Jared Curtis. The 5-star QB coming from Nashville was the star of the show for Smart’s 2026 roster. This kid is marked as the N0.1 QB in the entire nation by 247Sports, so when he decided to decommit from UGA, it had to hurt.

Now, the reasoning behind leaving Georgia was simple. Curtis had received multiple offers from other teams after his pledge, and he needed time to make a final decision. However, with Lewis off the table and the recruitment season almost ending, it is important for Smart to secure the bag cause if he fails, then not only will it leave a massive hole in the UGA recruitment ranking, but it will also mess up the entire 2026 roster plans.

The question now is: Can Smart do it? See, as per the latest predictions, there is a 50% chance Curtis is going to the Buckeyes. With Ryan Day having quite the year and the team ranked at the No.2 spot, it is quite clear why the Buckeyes have such a massive chance at securing the kid. But, if Georgia pulls a miracle and maybe ends up winning the natty, then Curtis could make a comeback to UGA.
