Is Kirby Smart losing his grip on Georgia's recruitment with another potential decommitment?

Shamari Earls. Marked as the 4-star for the 2025 class, this dude has single-handedly managed to shake up the entire Georgia and Michigan recruiting staff. Why? He is marked as the No.9 Cornerback in the entire nation and the No.67 overall player in the entire nation. Getting him on the team would be an easy way to make their recruiting class top-notch. Now, the thing is, Shamari Earls is quite fascinated with the Wolverines. Sherrone Moore hasn’t had the best season, but if he can manage to bag Earls, then it will open up some new opportunities for the 2025 roster.

However, there is a problem. See, originally Earls committed to UGA and Kirby Smart is smart enough to not let a special player like him go so easily. Back on The Michigan Insider, Sam Webb explains the entire scenario. “For Shamari Earls to visit, given the fever with which Georgia tried to get him not to visit, it was very significant that he took the visit anyway,” Webb mentioned. Smart and his staff have tried to stop him, but the thing right now is that even Bulldogs insiders are predicting that Earls will probably flip.

If Smart loses out on his dude, it would mark the 3rd decommit of this year. It’s November already, and the recruitment for the 2025 roster is almost over. While UGA has been held as the No.3 on the ESPN recruiting rankings list, they still have managed to lose multiple players in October.

The first one to go was DL Christian Garrett. Marked as the highest-ranked DL for the 2025 class of the Bulldogs, losing Garrett is a massive blow to Smart and his plans for the entire roster. Garrett ranked as the No.17 DL in the entire nation as per 247Sports.

Adding insult to injury was Jared Curtis‘ decommitment. “When I first committed to Georgia, I wasn’t fully aware of what was to come,” Curtis had mentioned while talking about why he decided to move away from the Dawgs. There is a high chance Bama can pick up Curtis, but we still gotta wait for it. Either way, the point is, if Smart loses Earls as well, that “No.3” rank would mean nothing. But there is one more question. Is picking Michigan a good choice?

A second chance to rebuild the Wolverines

See, UGA has its fair share of major problems. And no, it is not petty squabbles. These are serious issues. Smart and his reign at the camp have turned into an Urban Meyer 2.0 era. Why? Because every second month you open the news, you find a new Dawgs player in trouble with the law. First the Rara Thomas incident, then the Colbie Young incident. It kind of feels like Smart has little to no control over what is happening with his boys and that is concerning. It is almost as if UGA is turning into Gators back when it was ‘Gangsville’ under Meyer.

Have an interesting take?

But what about Michigan? See, when Jim Harbaugh left this roster with Sherrone Moore, people had thought that the new HC was getting handed a readymade team. Boy, oh boy, were people wrong. The moment Harbaugh ran away to the NFL, the entire floodgates of cheating allegations poured through and the Wolverines were in hot water. If that wasn’t enough, the roster Harbaugh handed to Moore is like a hollow shell of its former self.

The notable players are all out or just plain lost, and Moore has little to no control over his offense and defense. However, there is still a silver lining. It doesn’t matter if the Wolverines don’t crack the playoffs this year. Yes, the fans will be hurt, and that is alright. The point is, for 2025, Moore is finally getting a chance to build a roster as per his liking, and getting Earls onboard is one step towards that dream. Still, we gotta wait and watch what Shamari finally decides on.
