Something wild’s brewing down in T-Town… and nah, it’s not about barbecue or some SEC beef. This time, there’s been some chatter behind closed doors, flashes of freaky-good DBs, and one star wideout not even suiting up. Whispers are flying out of Bryant-Denny about some DBs moving mad different, some young guns actin’ like vets, and a head coach with a whole new vibe. You blinked? You missed it. Because Kalen DeBoer dropped a whole major sermon and shook the Tide fanbase sideways.
On Friday, Alabama hit spring practice No. 11 with its second scrimmage inside the Bryant-Denny Stadium. No Nick Saban. No problem—apparently. Kalen DeBoer, the new shot-caller, stepped to the mic after practice and didn’t just talk shop. He set the tone. Especially when it came to the secondary. Y’all know Alabama’s DBs don’t play, and this year’s crew? Might be on demon time. “Both corners and safeties together have really kind of reconfigured and are playing extremely high level of football,” DeBoer said. “They’re seeking out. They’re hunting the ball…they’re confident.”

Translation? They ain’t waiting. They are out there poaching like it’s open season. And he gave major flowers to new DB coaches Maurice Linguist and Jason Jones, calling them the glue guys who’ve made that whole unit gel like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in a lunchbox. It’s deeper than just raw talent, though—DeBoer made it clear. “A takeaway is really the expectation for those guys every single play.” That’s the standard now. Not hope. Expectation.
Mind you, this praise came while two major pieces were still out of the mix. Domani Jackson – Bama’s top corner—is nursing an injury, and Keon Sabb, who held it down at safety last year before getting hit against Tennessee, still isn’t back fully. Yet, DeBoer didn’t flinch. He actually dropped a feel-good update on Keon Sabb: “Keon, we continue to get the feedback and reports. It’s super positive. Even today, another positive report. Probably as positive as we’ve had. And we expected that.”
Now, let’s be real. Bama’s defense wasn’t the reason they missed the College Football Playoff last year. We all know who fumbled the playoff spot. Anyway, these boys still only gave up 17.4 points per game—10th in the country, for y’all stat-heads. They literally bullied Eliah Drinkwitz‘s Mizzou with a 34–0 shutout and turned SEC games into backyard beatdowns. They had a +7 turnover margin and only gave up a 33% third-down conversion rate. Quiet killers. Straight business.
So imagine that defense… but now deeper, nastier, and backed by fresh blood. Early enrollees like Dijon Lee Jr. are out there looking like they skipped freshman year and jumped straight to Sundays. Utah transfer Cameron Calhoun is locked in. Returning heads like Zabien Brown, Bray Hubbard, and Zavier Mincey got the experience. Even DeBoer had to admit, “The defensive backfield a year ago at this time, thin, new faces… I don’t see [these guys] as freshmen anymore.” He isn’t lying. These boys look grown.

Kalen DeBoer on Ryan Williams’ injury update
While the defense has been out here flexing, not everyone strapped up for Friday’s scrimmage. One major name—Ryan Williams—was notably absent. But before Tide fans start hyperventilating, chill. DeBoer cleared the air real quick: “We didn’t have Ryan scrimmage today. Just taking care of him,” he said. “There’s a couple of nicks and things like that, but if you asked him, he’d be out there and scrimmaging.”
Look, Ryan Williams was Jeremiah Smith before Jeremiah Smith was Jeremiah Smith. His resume’s already heavy: 48 grabs, 865 yards, and 8 touchdowns as a FRESHMAN. Man did all that before he could legally vote. That’s wild! And if you’re wondering if he’s locked into a specific WR role – don’t. DeBoer says he’s got that Swiss Army Knife vibe. “He’s a versatile guy,” DeBoer added. “Inside, outside, field, boundary… doesn’t matter. And you gotta make sure that we continue to give those opportunities down the field… but also just getting the ball in his hands.”

So yeah, they’re being careful, but they aren’t worried. Just maintenance mode. But what about the depth chart at WR? It’s starting to look thin. With Danny Lewis Jr. already shelved, and Josh Cuevas plus Marshall Pritchett out too, the tight end room looks like a ghost town. That means even more weight on WRs like Kendrick Law and Jalen Hale to step up. A-Day’s coming April 12, but heads up—it’s not a full scrimmage this year. More of a light show. Free entry, but no TV. You want the scoop? Better show up in person.
Bottom line: The Crimson Tide ain’t sleeping. DeBoer’s got the DBs looking nasty, the freshmen moving like vets, and Ryan Williams resting like he’s in a Maybach. Spring ain’t over, but the message is clear—this Bama defense is going to carry that offense to playoffs.
