Is Michael Penix Jr. the most underrated talent in college football right now?

August 18th was full of wild things. First, we saw a 4-star LB being taken away from Kalen DeBoer by the Vols, and now we hear that the Falcons ain’t gonna put their Heisman-winning QB on the field before 2025. Falcons HC Raheem Morris dropped a massive bomb that he and the staff had decided to bench Michael Penix Jr for the remainder of 2024. The last time we got to see the rookie play was against the Dolphins and the kid went 104 yards with 9-of-16. Not only that, he also managed to sneak in a solid deep ball during the match.

This shocked Kalen DeBoer as well. Back on the show Green Light on August 19th, we find Chris Long and Kalen DeBoer talking about this baffling situation. “I’ve told so many people, I don’t know how his game doesn’t translate to the NFL,” DeBoer noted. Penix and DeBoer have shared an amazing bond. While juggling at Indiana, Penix desperately needed a fresh start and DeBoer joined the Huskies right at that time. DeBoer already knew Penix while he was working as the offensive coordinator for Indiana. “He’s a guy you could build a team around,” was something DeBoer had said about Penix and he was right. Penix went on to become a Heisman runner-up under DeBoer. Josh Pate put it perfectly back on his show. “Kalen DeBoer turned that guy into like a full-on assault weapon through the air,” Pate had noted. With DeBoer’s experience with the offense, Penix flourished.

“He doesn’t take anything for granted. So I’m fired up for him,” DeBoer mentions. Penix is amazing when it comes down to accuracy and throws. DeBoer himself has said that Penix manages to put in some very catchable throws on the field. Not only that, he has a heck lot of skill when it comes down to short shallow passes. The entire Falcons situation is weird. While we can only hope that Morris catches onto the mistake he made and reverts his decision, DeBoer, on the other hand, has found himself another Heisman candidate.

Meet Jalen Milroe

The preseason scrimmage brought us a sight to behold. 5-star QB Jalen Milroe landed a 50-yard touchdown. While Nick Saban was at the Tides, the team was a defensive powerhouse. When DeBoer took over the reins, he switched up everything. The team now has the best offensive lines in the whole country. With Milroe on the lead, the 2024 season is looking solid for DeBoer. However, what’s more noteworthy is the change Milroe has shown ever since DeBoer started coaching him.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Michael Penix Jr. the most underrated talent in college football right now?

Have an interesting take?

With Saban, Milroe had clocked in a completion rate of around 55%. That number has changed to 70-80% under DeBoer. That is no joke. Heck, even Milroe has acknowledged this. “As a quarterback, you know he’s an offensive mind, so I’m able to grow each and every day with him,” the kid had said. Even back on the Ross Tucker Podcast, Emory Hunt picked Jalen Milroe as the best QB prospect in college football. Folks, we are looking at another Michael Penix chapter unfolding right in front of us.
