On November 25, 2023, Michigan Offensive lineman Zak Zinter, a 6’6″, 310-pound powerhouse, a pillar for the Wolverines, suffered a season-ending injury during the Wolverine’s rivalry game against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Zinter, one of the most decorated Guard in recent history, a consensus first-team All-Big Ten guard, and potential All-American was carted off the field in the third quarter after a diabolical tackle into his leg by Ohio State D-line. The game was 17-17, a crucial game of the season. The entire stadium went mute.

Joel Klatt, calling the game, described the somber moment when Zinter went down. “We knew he pretty clearly broke his leg. The air leaves the building. And it is quiet. You can hear a pin drop. There was just an outpouring of emotion.” Teammates, visibly shaken to their core, struggled to process the injury, especially his brother-in-field offensive lineman, #77 Trevor Keegan, who broke down in tears during the commercial break.

But then, something extraordinary happened. Klatt had never experienced this before in his career. Even though the game was on a commercial break, the crown began to chant, “Let’s go, Zak. Let’s go, Zak,” rang through the stadium. Joel Klatt explains it wasn’t just one section—It was the entire Ann Harbour, creating a unified roar of support for Zinter. Klatt noted, “I had to take my headset off because the noise was so overwhelming. It was the loudest I’ve ever heard during a commercial …. fans weren’t waiting for music…. were chanting for Zak.” This Statement shows how the fans were absolutely fired up for Zak, their chants so loud it shook the stadium like nothing else mattered.

That moment lifted the team’s spirit and flipped the switch in the Wolverines offense. The players now have something greater to play for. They were not just playing for the name on the back of their jersey, but for their fallen comrade. The very next drive saw Blake Corum break free for a 22-yard touchdown, with the entire Michigan flashing the number 65 in tribute to Zinter. Klatt, deeply moved, described it as a moment he would never forget. “It was one of the most emotional sequences I’ve ever witnessed in football,” he said.
