Is Jalen Milroe the next Jalen Hurts, or is the comparison too soon to make?

Being compared to Jalen Hurts is an excellent start for Alabama’s top-rated quarterback, Jalen Milroe. On August 9, Alabama football analyst Clint Lamb said during an interview, “I have compared Jalen Milroe to Jalen Hurts. It’s not the same, but as far as the skill set, it looks like Jalen Hurts.” Although the former quarterback was shaped under Nick Saban and won the CFP National Championship in 2017, Hurts secured his career with the Philadelphia Eagles with a 5-year contract.

Interestingly, Milroe’s progress under Kalen DeBoer resembles Hurts’ development. So, in Lamb’s opinion, it is pretty obvious that Milroe doesn’t have to leave Alabama because DeBoer is considered his magic maker. However, Alabama’s star quarterback does not compare favorably with Shedeur Sanders, a top-rated 2025 NFL Draft prospect.

On August 27, 2024, CBS Sports College Football shared a post on their IG account regarding an NFL comparison among power-four quarterbacks, in which Milroe is compared with Hurts. He was recognized for his ability to extend plays with his legs and to tuck the ball. On the other hand, Hurts is known for his performance in the college and pro leagues. However, having a coach like the offensive genius DeBoer certainly helps Milroe’s cause.

On this note, On3 analyst JD Pickell said, “I think they’re going to play to his strengths as a runner while giving him more help than he’s ever had before as a passer.” Additionally, Milroe recorded 2,834 yards and 23 touchdowns last year. Conversely, Hurts scored 23 touchdowns with 3,858 yards in collegiate football. So, the comparison is entirely meaningful, although there are many differences, too. But are the comparisons with Sanders valid? Let’s have a look.

Those familiar with NFL drafts know they revolve around selling hope, and no position exemplifies this better than quarterbacks. Colorado QB Shedeur is among the highest-rated in that position because of his explosive ability and shiftiness in small spaces. In the present class of 2024, no quarterbacks get discourse popping like Sanders due to his track record. He won the Jerry Rice Award as the best freshman in 2021. In 2023, he finished the season with 70 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions and fit in at the FBS level. He also has been crowned with titles like SWAC Freshman of the Year, First-team All-SWAC, Deacon Jones Trophy, and more.

He also showcased his skill and potential in several games with the Buffaloes against major power-houses like TCU and became the Day 2 pick for the NFL draft for the 2025 class. Currently, the quarterback focuses on improving his skills to become a next-level player, as he needs to grow physically to become a complete and dynamic player. Additionally, his arm passes and decision-making ability give him the top position. Now, fans eagerly await his performance in the upcoming season.
