When Caleb Williams left for the NFL, you could pretty much say that the Trojan’s dream of becoming the national champs vanished. Paul Finebaum noted that HC Lincoln Riley probably had the worst coaching job last season. Quite true though. While Williams was there, the Trojans had an 11-3 run. When we switched to the 2023 season, we could see that the team was already falling apart. Williams and Riley managed to drag the season out, losing 5 out of 7 games. The team’s offense and defense are on an edge and Riley is walking on thin ice. Trojans ain’t making any headlines this year.
Well, we were wrong about the headlines part cause as wild as it may sound; the Trojans have decided to retire Caleb Williams’s jersey. MLFootball took to X on September 6th to inform us, “BREAKING: USC has just retired Caleb Williams number 13. Caleb has not even played a single game in the #NFL yet.” This did not sit well with the fans. “Is this a joke,” a fan reacted quickly regarding the decision.

While you might think that this fan is defending Williams and disapproving of USC’s decision, you’d be wrong. What that fan said was directed at Caleb Williams himself. MLFootball’s entire post made it feel like USC was making a harsh decision by retiring William’s jersey this early. However, fans think that this is perfectly fine. The entire argument regarding him not playing a single game in the NFL makes zero sense because some people think that Williams has done nothing but win a single Heisman.
Yep, some fans think, winning a Heisman is not a big deal. Let that sink in. While it is true that we have only seen Williams give his best during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, you have to be joking if you say that he has not done enough for the Trojans and Lincoln Riley. Back in 2022, he led the team to a solid 11-3 season. We agree that the 2023 season and the 5 losses out of 7 games during that season isn’t a good look, but calling him a one-trick pony is wild. However, let’s find out what everyone else thinks.
Is Caleb Williams a bust?

“Bro didn’t do anything but win a Heisman,” was the first a fan noted after learning about the USC announcement. See, we told you that some fans think winning Heisman is not a big thing. During the 3 seasons where we saw him perform, Williams locked in 93 touchdowns. He had a completion rate of around 66%. Now if you call that “didn’t do anything” then we genuinely do not know what will impress you. Another fan’s take was a subtle jab to MLFootball as well. “It’s almost like his NFL stats don’t matter for this,” they wrote on X. Much like we mentioned before, talking about not playing any NFL games did not make any sense if we try to connect it with his jersey being retired.

The final 2 fans kept it light and laughed about the entire situation. “That’s pretty wild,” one of them noted. This was a subtle nod toward Williams, getting his jersey retired this year. “Dang,” the final fan said. Well, for now, let us just hope that Williams manages to open soon during a game in the NFL.
