Is Cam Ward's Heisman dream shattered after that strip sack against Georgia Tech?

HA, this is what makes college football so GREAT. Miami Hurricanes were unbeatable. Whenever a team did get close, Cam Ward swooped right in and saved the day for the boys. These guys trailed by over 10 points in 3 games. Virginia Tech, Duke, and Bears, what did Ward do? Made some amazing last-moment long plays and got the W for the Hurricanes. But not this time, boys. Going into the 3rd quarter, Georgia Tech had quite the head start. Miami was once trailing by 11 points on the board, and all eyes were on Cam Ward. Hurricanes generally turn things around in the 2nd half, but nope.

With 2nd&10 in the 4th quarter and barely 2 minutes left on the clock, Hurricanes were close to winning this back. 23-28, they only needed one miracle from Cam Ward to take this one home and add it to the list of their close games. But the Yellow Jackets won’t let it go easy. With pockets collapsing all around Ward, he had to make a run for it, but there goes the dream. Romello Height comes from behind, and with that strip sack, the football pops off. All the Georgia Tech fans in the stadium storm the field. Now, this does pose a question: will this deter the chances of Ward getting the first draft pick?

See, back on Mel Kiper’s list, Ward was put on the QB2 spot. While he had made amazing plays, none of it was as great as Shedeur Sanders‘ massive Hail Mary against the Bears. Another thing to point out is the fact that Shedeur could be a better player than Ward.

The Buffs O-line is the biggest problem. It has been for the past year. The Kansas State game is the perfect example of what Shedeur Sanders can do despite having an offensive line that is as good as a weak wafer biscuit. Can Ward pull the same feat? All of these puts his 2025 first-draft pick question up in the air.

And then comes the Heisman discussion. Every year, Georgia Tech comes and runs wild over some unsuspecting ranked team, and this year’s victim was the Miami Hurricanes. See, Ward was standing tall on the +200 odds on the Heisman list. With over 3k yards under his belt and 32 touchdowns, he quite literally has more stats than anyone else on the board.

But are stats enough to judge a player’s capability of becoming the Heisman winner? Yes, there is no doubt that Ward has managed to turn some games around for the Hurricanes. Take the Bears game as an example. Miami was down 18-38 against California. From there, Ward managed to snag 3 back-to-back touchdowns to get the team a 39-38 win over the Bears.

Have an interesting take?

Still, this loss to Georgia Tech is going to stick out like a sore thumb. More so because the game-ended sack was all Ward’s fault, he had an opening, but with the pocket collapsing, he just didn’t let the football go. Now, this brings us to the discussion of whether this end to the unbeaten streak pushes Travis Hunter to the No.1 spot or not.

Travis Hunter is coming to take the lead

A few days back, we had covered that the only real threat for Hunter was going to come from Cam Ward. Both these guys had +200 odds to their names, and it was a head-to-head battle. While Ward takes the cake in terms of stats and accuracy and the ability to change the face of the game, Hunter is out there playing 2 sides of the football and breaking records.

Against the Rams, the dude managed to nail a 26-year-old record with his 13 catches, 1 massive defensive interception, which turned into a 38-yard gain, 2 touchdowns, and 100 yards. And then this guy went and broke another record by becoming the first player in the entire Big 12 to receive honors as an offense and defense player.

All of these count and when piled against Ward, the Hurricanes star’s chances of grabbing that award look bleak. However, the Buffs still have to win this game against Texas Tech if they even want to compete against someone like Miami. If Hunter manages to get in some solid plays, then we all know that he is going to become the new Heisman favorite.
