The Florida Gators are out of the mud and breathing some fresh air. The Swamp saw a tectonic upturn transpire down the stretch this past season. This upturn coincided with the powers that be bestowing a vote of confidence in HC Billy Napier. They finished the year 8-5. A respectable outcome within the treacherous southeastern faction. Now, the focus has swiftly pivoted to translating this momentum on the gridiron over to the recruitment front. The Gators currently have the no.11 ranked class heading into 2024, and they’re still yearning for more down the line.
In this era of continual change and evolution in College Football, one thing has remained constant. Certain parts of the country remain the epicenters of production talent. Texas has perpetually been a hub for some of the best athletes to spew out of. So has Florida. It’d be a shame if Billy Napier wasn’t maximizing this to his fullest. According to one Florida insider with his finger on the proverbial pulse, he’s doing just that.
Discussing affairs over the On3 Recruits YouTube channel was Keith Niebuhr. Keith is the lead publisher at GatorsOnline. He reaffirmed that Billy Napier is, indeed, on the road doing a literal recruitment drive. “First of all, he’s gone and seen some of the commitments that Florida has already for 2026” said Niebuhr. He name-dropped Will Griffin, the no.11 QB in his class, as well as 4-star CB Jaelen Waters, both in and around the Tampa region. “[Napier] is going to go see some defensive linemen down in southwest Florida. including two players that are both among the top 15 defensive line recruits in the country for 2026” he continued. The two in question would be Kendall Guervil and James Johnson. The list doesn’t end there, either. Billy Napier really is outside.

Billy Napier also reportedly stopped by the IMG sports academy in Bradenton. There, he “was to see a multitude of prospects, but mainly a bunch of offensive linemen.” stated Niebuhr. He was particularly upbeat about the type of player Napier is keeping tabs on from this early juncture. “Billy [Napier] knows you’ve got to build a team from the inside out. That’s where a lot of the focus is going to be in this cycle.” He reiterated the aforementioned sentiment about making sure the Gators are squeezing the most out of in-state proximity.
“Quite frankly, the state of Florida is loaded in the 2026 class…don’t think the Gators are really going to have to go too far out of that typical footprint in this cycle. We’re seeing that in early visits from Billy Napier.” remarked Keith Niebuhr. Things out of Gainesville are well and truly looking rosy. However, there is a darkish cloud imminently forming.
The sheer volume of talent Napier is procuring will soon present a problem. He has cherished the problem of plenty, enjoying one of the deepest rosters in the FBS. It’s been one of his modus operandis at Florida. A deep squad with options across each position. This strategy is about to become redundant, and coach Napier is already bemoaning the prospect.

Billy Napier unhappy with the imminent proposition pertaining to roster control
The NCAA House Settlement, poised to kick in this summer, is bringing along wholesale changes to CFB. The dynamic around NIL is going to see the biggest transformation. However, there’s a more direct sporting change also in the pipeline. It is expected that roster sizes will be limited to 105 players as part of the new directive. Billy Napier has echoed qualms over this.
“It’s going to be one of the more transformational things in our game in the last 20 years,” he said. “I think, just relative to your year-round process, how do you practice, how you do all season, how do you develop players?” The Florida Gators had a roster of 131 players last season. “The issue is we are not the National Football League; we can’t replace players,” said Billy Napier. This creates a fascinating conundrum.

On one hand, Florida is reaping the rewards of a good second half of the season. DJ Lagway, among others, is a great pull for prospects to come play for them. On the other hand, they can’t utilize this as much as they’d like to. Napier is going to have to make adjustments to his methodology. His lack of adaptability, often his Achilles’ heel, has sometimes sparked skepticism about his future in the Swamp. Within these evolving times, he shall also need to follow suit.
