Is Michigan's quarterback carousel a sign of poor planning or a necessary gamble for greatness?

Head coach Sherrone Moore is in a tight corner once again. Since the season started, Michigan has been facing problems every single week. However, during Week 9, they managed to win against their rival Michigan State 24-17. They could not celebrate their win for long because they lost a commitment from four-star quarterback Carter Smith on Wednesday. Do you know that they played with three different quarterbacks this season?

It looks like the quarterback situation is going to continue. However, after Carter announced his decommitment, people blamed five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood for his decommitment. Underwood is committed to LSU. Michigan insider spilled the beans behind Carter’s decommitment on Youtube channel ROC Boys Football.

According to the insider, HC Moore and OC Kirk Campell had previously been transparent with Smith about their intentions to pursue Underwood, and that could have affected Smith’s commitment. “Michigan is preparing to go all-in four-star quarterback Bryce Underwood. My take on it is, what kind of makes sense for both parties, right? If you’re Carter Smith, you know Michigan and Sherrone Moore. Kirk Campbell was very upfront with Carter Smith, saying, Hey, we’re going to go after Bryce Underwood. For Carter Smith to make sense to explore your options. But on the same side, it makes a lot of sense for Michigan; although you really like Carter Smith, it makes a lot of sense to go all in on Bryce Underwood; at the end of the day, you’re not going to find yourself with the opportunity of an instate quarterback who’s the number one player in the country and have a chance at getting them.”

This season, Michigan has faced a lot of problems with their starting quarterback. Will they learn from their mistakes or continue to dig a bigger hole for themselves? The insider further highlighted the growing aggression of pursuing top players as teams look to build strong rosters, even if the current status of any recruit is complicated by their commitments.

“You’re not going to find yourself in that situation all too often when you have the opportunity to potentially land a quarterback like Bryce Underwood, who I and I don’t use. This term, lightly, I think, is a generationally talented quarterback. You got to go out and try to make it happen and if that comes at the expense of losing the commitment of Carter Smith, it’s unfortunate. I think in a perfect world, Michigan fans would prefer the commitment of Bryce Underwood and Carter Smith but at the end of the day, this makes sense for Carter Smith. I think it makes sense for this Michigan program to want to get into kind of the quarterback picture for Michigan.”

As a Michigan fan, do you agree with the insider? Belleville native Underwood is a 6 foot 4 inch quarterback who is currently ranked as ESPN’s top overall recruit for the 2025 class. He joined hands with LSU on 6th January 2024. After Carter made his decision, all the spotlight was on him. Will he ditch LSU and join Moore and Kirk? Till then, let’s read the goodbye message from Carter for OC and the team.

Carter’s Stellar performance at high school and message for Michigan

Who does not want the No. 1 player in their team? Similarly, Michigan fans must be excited about the possibility of signing Bryce Underwood. But at the cost of Carter, a 6-foot-3-inch QB from Florida is ranked as the No. 155 prospect in the 2025 class by ESPN. He was the sixth-highest player in Michigan’s incoming recruiting class. Will his decommitment affect Moore’s 2025 class? As he is open to recruiting, we might see him against Michigan soon. The former Bishop Verot High School player has threw for 2,223 yards and scored 29 touchdowns with only four interceptions. His impressive performance throughout the year helped him earn the title of state’s player of the year during his junior year at the school.

Let’s hear his final words for Michigan and OC Kirk: “I would like to start by thanking the coaching staff at Michigan for everything they have done for me.” He added, “I would especially like to thank Coach Kirk Campbell for everything and for giving me such an incredible opportunity. With that being said, I would like to announce that I have decommitted from the University of Michigan.”

Coming back to the intensity of college football this season, Michigan has made lots of mistakes, and they can’t afford more of them. After two defeats in three weeks, they somehow managed to win against their rival Michigan State. Will they continue the momentum, or will the coming week bring more challenges for

Moore and the squad?
