Again, it’s the hot seat for Billy Napier. It’s not just the underwhelming team performance but also his puzzling strategic decisions that are putting his future in Florida up for debate. Despite a crucial need to upgrade their offense, Napier remains fixated on defense. His latest hiring of Vinnie Sunseri only intensified the doubts. Is he really testing his $51M safety net? His problem doesn’t end there, though.

Florida’s 2025 schedule is more daunting than their last 8-win season. Matt Hayes of USA Today can only see the worse coming for Billy Napier this year. He didn’t mince words on it during his appearance on That SEC Football Podcast on January 31. “It’s worse this year,” he stated. “It’s gonna be worse this year. Because you’re at LSU, you’re at Ole Miss, all those teams that you played at home. Those big home games at Miami, they’re all on the road now.

In 2025, Florida has five tough road matchups against LSU, Miami, Texas A&M, Kentucky, and Ole Miss. The Gators managed to win against the UK, LSU, and Ole Miss last season at home. But can they have the same success on the road? Billy Napier could be in a fix, particularly with teams like Miami who acquired former Georgia QB Carson Beck, and LSU, known for their formidable home-field advantage in Baton Rouge.

The scheduling doesn’t help either. Florida has back-to-back road games against the Tigers and Hurricanes in September and the Wildcats and Rebels in November. Talk about physical and mental pressure! And Hayes can already see Napier’s plight saying, “He’s got a lot to go through. I mean, they’ve got to win games. They’ve got to show that they’re improving.” Is that a possible scenario? Improve in 2025? With Napier’s job on the line, the road to improvement still looks narrow, especially after his self-confidence ended up in a risky gamble.

Billy Napier refuses to address the offense

Billy Napier, despite a $51.8 million seven-year contract, isn’t making a great impression handling the OC duties. Under his play-calling, Florida went stagnant, stuck with an average of 29.5 PPG. In 2022 and 2023, the Gators finished 38th and 47th in the nation in total offense, respectively. The lack of a dedicated OC could be their downfall this season. Still, there’s no change on the horizon.

Instead of addressing the big hole in the offense, Billy Napier’s decision to bring in Vinnie Sunseri sparked speculation. The former Washington safeties coach will replace UF’s former DC Austin Armstrong as the new co-defensive coordinator. Hear it from SEC insider Mike Bratton who said, “I don’t think Billy Napier is that good of a coach. I mean, I think that’s quite evident. I’m not saying he’s like horrible, but I think he’s an average game day coach.”
